Personal Profile
Lin Yangzi, male, a member of the Manchu banner, originally named Zhang Jingju, holds a bachelor's degree. He was born in 1958 in the ancient city of Shanhaiguan, a renowned hometown of calligraphy.
From childhood, he displayed exceptional intelligence and a deep passion for poetry, literature, and brushwork. At the age of ten, he became a disciple of the renowned calligrapher Jiang Ping, and since then has diligently practiced for fifty years. During the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, he was fortunate to find solace in poetry and calligraphy, which allowed him to preserve the image of blue skies and white clouds from his youth. After the end of the Cultural Revolution, he was luckily granted the opportunity to pursue higher education. Upon graduation, he worked in a local government office. However, realizing that a career in politics and calligraphy could not be reconciled, after much deliberation, he completely withdrew from public service at the end of the 1990s, retreated into his studio "Ximo Caolu," and embarked on a free-spirited life devoted to ink and brush.

Lin Yangzi is particularly devoted to the modern cursive script, especially the small cursive style, following the style of Wang Xizhi in running script and Ouyang Xun in regular script. When writing, he excels in reciting classical poetry and prose from memory. He once served as a council member of the Hebei Calligraphy and Painting Research Association and the Hebei News Association, and has traveled extensively to visit ancient temples and mountains, absorbing the essence of calligraphy and ink art. He admires Tao Yuanming’s poetic tranquility—stopping beneath the clouds, gathering chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, leisurely gazing upon the southern hills—and often composes poetry and prose for personal enjoyment, expressing his inner aspirations. Naturally indifferent to fame and profit, he has never assigned monetary value to his brushwork for decades, freely giving his works to neighboring farmers and fishermen who request them, finding great joy and satisfaction in this practice. Particularly commendable is that for decades he has consistently used his brush and ink to chronicle the seasons, donating calligraphy works to impoverished regions, earning widespread praise from scholars.
In 2018, Lin Yangzi was officially certified by the Cultural Heritage Protection Division of the Ministry of Culture and the Expert Evaluation Committee as a "National First-Class Calligrapher."
