Personal Profile

Ma Dongshan, born in January 1956, is from Kaifeng, Henan Province. He graduated from the Fine Arts Program at Henan University. Currently, he serves as Honorary President of the Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting Art Research Institute, Honorary President of the Qingdao Jinshi Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Guest Professor at the Wu Changshuo Art Research Institute, Member of the China Calligraphers Association, Council Member of the Henan Provincial Education Calligraphy and Painting Association, Vice President of the Kaifeng Calligraphy and Painting Education Association, Director of the Calligraphy and Painting Research Department at the Kaifeng Song Dynasty Capital Calligraphy and Painting Research Society, and Art Consultant for the Shenyang Yihai Auction Agency Center. He has been teaching at the Kaifeng Elderly Cadres University. For many years, he has been engaged in calligraphy and painting instruction, participating in the compilation of the Henan Province primary and secondary school textbook "Art of Calligraphy," emphasizing the absorption of diverse strengths and extensive learning with refined focus, striving for an artistic style that is rugged, ancient, and elegant—pleasing to the eye and moving to the soul. He began his study of calligraphy with Han dynasty clerical script, then explored extensively across history, seeking inspiration from both ancient and modern sources. His works have been selected for the 4th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition, the 4th National Exhibition of Middle-aged and Young Calligraphers and Seal Carvers, the 2nd Henan Province Exhibition of Middle-aged and Young Calligraphers: “Surfing the Ink Sea,” and the National Exhibition of Masterpieces by a Hundred Middle-aged and Young Calligraphers and Painters. He has won the Second Prize in the International “Peony Cup” Calligraphy and Painting Competition and the Second Prize in the “National University Calligraphy Exhibition and Evaluation.” His calligraphy and painting works have repeatedly received first and second prizes in major exhibitions within China and internationally, and have been collected by relevant institutions and enthusiasts.
