Shi Tianyuan has been passionate about calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting since childhood, consistently adhering to the practice of "ten characters daily, one painting weekly" without interruption. Over decades, he has diligently studied and refined his skills in various styles, including regular script by Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, Zhao Mengfu, and Liu Gongquan; clerical script from the Cao Quan Stele, Yi Ying Stele, and Zhang Qian Stele; as well as modern masters such as Qi Gong and Tian Yingzhang in regular script and hard-pen calligraphy—his pursuit has never ceased. He has long been immersed in the joy that calligraphy and painting bring him. After more than thirty years of dedicated effort, his calligraphic achievements are remarkable, and he has developed a distinctive personal style. Continuously learning and researching, he frequently participates in calligraphy and painting competitions at various levels across the country, absorbing strengths from diverse sources to forge his unique artistic identity. His large-character calligraphy and regular script exude profundity and grandeur, offering a powerful artistic impact; his running-cursive script flows effortlessly like clouds and water. His works combine the solemnity and richness of Yan’s style, the elegance and fluidity of the Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), and the disciplined precision of the two Tians (Tian Yingzhang and Tian Zhan). What is most admirable is his ability to find himself within tradition and cultivate his own style. His structural composition is exceptionally refined: characters are stable and dignified, harmoniously proportioned, appropriately responsive, skillfully balanced, with strong upward slants, extended strokes, and fluid transitions. His overall layout is rigorous yet relaxed, natural and aesthetically pleasing. He also possesses unique strengths in technical execution: his lines are condensed and vigorous, spontaneous yet natural, with every brushstroke conveying intent. Deeply committed to the study of traditional painting and calligraphy, he has persevered through years of cultivation, producing works that rank among the finest in his city. His art has reached a level of singular craftsmanship—meticulously structured, ancient in strength and depth, combining spaciousness with compactness, tranquility with vigor, rich in rhythm and charm. Through relentless practice and study, his calligraphic skills have achieved great heights, and his works have received numerous awards in national calligraphy exhibitions. In terms of artistic philosophy, Tianyuan understands that the path of art is arduous and long; only through constant progress and continuous refinement can true accomplishment be attained! 【Upholding Integrity】—his painting won an award in the city and was selected for the 8th National Art Competition, earning an Outstanding Work Award. His artworks were featured on a 2018 postage stamp issued by the Ministry of Culture’s International Postal Network and he was honored with the title “National Master of Painting and Calligraphy.”
