Personal Profile
Leng Yun, styled Lan Zhu Zhai Zhu. Born in 1981 in Xinyang, Henan. Apprenticed under Ruan Chengsen, a National First-Class Artist. Specializes in traditional Chinese paintings of orchids and bamboo. Member of the China Artists Exchange Association and the China Young Calligraphers and Painters Association. His works have been exhibited multiple times domestically and internationally, winning numerous honors. Currently serves as Producer-in-Chief of the “Cultural Tourism World” program on Henan TV’s New Rural Channel, Producer of the “Central Plains Youth” program, and journalist for China New Rural Magazine. Also an original music creator. Valuation of his works: 1000 RMB per square chi! Leng Yun has a deep passion for orchids and bamboo; his works frequently feature orchids, rocks, bamboo, and birds. Natural bamboo exists objectively, but when observed by the painter, it already differs from its natural state. The painter then processes and subjectively refines it into “bamboo in the mind,” which is what is meant by “conception precedes brushwork.” When finally rendered onto paper as “bamboo in the hand,” it becomes a “second nature” created by the artist. Both “bamboo in the mind” and “bamboo in the hand” represent elevations of “bamboo seen by the eye”—that is, the artist transforms the objective image perceived visually, through mental imagery processing, into a typical artistic image via technical execution. This is the process of artistic creation. Since ancient times, China has held the saying that “viewing orchid leaves surpasses viewing orchid flowers.” Its flowers are simple yet elegant, standing gracefully upright, deeply beloved by the Chinese people. Together with bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum, it is collectively known as the “Four Gentlemen.” Leng Yun has also created many orchid-themed paintings expressing new meanings and perspectives toward various subjects. For instance, some works draw upon the characteristics of orchids to convey the ideal of maintaining humility in success, resilience in failure, and a calm, balanced mindset. An accompanying poem reads: “Orchids and bamboo are inherently connected, always dwelling among green hills and clear waters; frost and snow cannot wither them, spring blooms never showy—laughing at those who flaunt gaudy colors as transient guests.” Orchids inspire reflection: one should live like an orchid—serene, enduring, fragrant, neither frivolous nor ostentatious. Within a small painting, vast realms unfold, imbued with profound meaning. Other works depict clusters of orchids interspersed with thorns, symbolizing the magnanimous tolerance of a gentleman toward lesser men.
