Since childhood, influenced by his mother’s paper-cutting and embroidery art, he developed a love for painting, but due to lack of formal instruction, he could only learn by copying comic books. After entering university in 1980, the library’s collection provided him with opportunities to study painting theory and view masterpieces by renowned artists. He devoted his spare time to diligent self-study, achieving modest success; his works won first prize and second prize respectively in the university’s annual calligraphy and painting competitions in 1982 and 1983, primarily featuring sketch works. After starting work, from 1986 to 1989, he studied at the Correspondence University of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, under the guidance of renowned Nanyang teachers such as Professors Zhu Jianfeng, Song Kun, and Li Zongyuan, focusing on traditional Chinese landscape painting. As his studies deepened and his understanding improved, he increasingly recognized the importance of calligraphy in learning and creating Chinese painting. Therefore, after 1996, he shifted his focus from painting to studying calligraphy under teachers Liu Xuhui and Li Zongyuan, successively practicing famous calligraphy works including Wang Xizhi’s “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection,” “Huai Su’s Collection of Wang Xizhi’s Holy Teaching Preface,” Wang Juchang’s Zhangcao “Thousand Character Classic” and its colophons, “Ming Dynasty Rubbing of Ji Jiu Zhang” colophons, and Yu Youren’s “Standard Cursive Script: Thousand Character Classic of the Sage of Cursive Script.” After 2005, he began attempting original creations.
