Zhang Jian: Male, Han ethnicity. Native of Changyuan, Henan. Born in March 1975, styled Mingjie, pen names Lengshi and Liming; self-styled Nishui Zhang, Tianyuan Moke, Pucheng Scholar, nicknamed Zhongzhou Xiao Jianzi; studio names: Guyun Studio, Xueming Residence, Muma Hall. Specializes in fine-brush and freehand-style paintings of horses, cranes, peonies, and other birds-and-flowers subjects. Currently Senior Calligrapher and Painter at Shenzhou Calligraphy and Painting Academy, member of the Oriental Hard-pen Calligraphy Association, member of the Chinese Horse Painting Association, member of the Chinese Horse Culture Artists Association, member of Xinxiang City Artists Association of Henan Province, director of Changyuan Calligraphy and Painting Association, director of Changyuan Calligraphy and Painting Research Society, contracted painter of China Calligraphy and Painting Mall, and contracted artist of Shuhua Number. Loved poetry, literature, and painting since childhood; studied painting and calligraphy in early years under local masters Lü Qinxuan, Su Yongxuan, Gan Zeping (Gan Ku), Dun Yanli, Yuan Yazhou, Li Pengyue, and others. Later studied under bird-and-flower painter Master Zhang Huiyue; received guidance in 2010 from Beijing-based horse-painting master Rui Yongde, and subsequently from horse-painting masters Zhou Wenjun and Liu Jianguo. Recently studied under Master Wang Xiangwen (one of the ten major disciples of Wei Jiangfan), the second-generation disciple of Xu Beihong. His works have been published in multiple newspapers, periodicals, and anthologies including Poetry Journal, Hard-pen Calligraphy Newspaper, Shenzhou Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper, and Calligraphy and Painting. Biographical entries included in Who’s Who of Contemporary Chinese Hard-pen Calligraphers, The Grand Compendium of Chinese Hard-pen Calligraphy Elites, The Dictionary of World-renowned Chinese Calligraphers, Painters and Seal Carvers, and The Grand Panorama of Contemporary Chinese Calligraphers and Painters.
