Hou Chungeng
Personal Profile
Hou Chungeng was born in a small village at the foothills of Funiu Mountain, in front of Sanxian Mountain. This area boasts beautiful mountains and clear waters and has been since ancient times a sacred site for the propagation of Taoist teachings, with a rich cultural atmosphere. Since childhood, he has been fond of calligraphy and painting. In calligraphy, he studied the styles of Wang Xizhi, Ouyang Xun, Sun Guoting, Zhao Mengfu, as well as contemporary renowned calligraphers Tian Yunzhang and Sun Xiaoyun. In traditional Chinese painting, he studied under Mr. He Yanzhe, a leading master of the Northern School in contemporary times. In calligraphy and painting, he pursues the vigor of ink and brush, natural transcendence, serendipitous yet disciplined expression, and opposes mechanical tracing or artificiality. Having long been active among the general public, he deeply believes that calligraphy and paintings are meant to be appreciated by people, not merely collected as artifacts! Gradually, he established the conviction to create artworks for thousands of households—only when artworks are both aesthetically pleasing and affordable can they keep pace with the times! Therefore, he often gifts his works to people from all walks of life at prices far below his official rate! Official rate: 2000 RMB per square chi.

Awarded First Prize in the 2019 National Huayun Cup Calligraphy and Painting Competition.
