Sun Baocheng on His Artistic Career:
Since childhood, I have loved calligraphy and painting. During school, whenever I saw illustrations in textbooks or other pictures, I would copy them on the back of my exercise books or on clean ground. At eighteen, I apprenticed under Xie Tiandao to study painting—this marked the true beginning of my artistic journey. In the early stages of learning, I frequently accompanied my teacher to participate in various painting activities and exhibitions locally. Initially, I painted stage backdrops for local theater troupes. During the Cultural Revolution, I was also busy writing Chairman Mao’s quotations and painting portraits of Mao Zedong and Lin Biao. I recall painting countless portraits of Chairman Mao, especially “Mao Zedong Goes to Anyuan.”
At that time, I painted not only locally but also traveled to neighboring provinces and cities to paint slogans and portraits of Chairman Mao for government offices and large enterprises and supply and marketing cooperatives.
My most memorable experience was in 1978, when I painted a 4m x 5m work titled “Chairman Mao, Zhu De, and Zhou Enlai Together” for the newly built local department store. It brought me great honor!
I vividly remember that era—technology was not yet advanced, cameras were not widespread, and for a period I traveled to rural areas to sketch portraits of elderly people face-to-face, which was very popular at the time.
Later, I pursued advanced studies specializing in figures, flower-birds, and landscapes. During my studies, I received guidance from many masters. Through decades of persistent effort, my artistic level has steadily improved. Subsequently, I have been invited to participate in various exhibitions and major calligraphy and painting competitions, gaining recognition from many professionals.
Driven by my passion for calligraphy and painting, I tirelessly study Chinese history, culture, and painting history, adhering to the principle of “learning and painting until the end of my life.”
Having devoted so many years奔波 (running around) for my artistic career, I am now 76 years old. I remain humble and diligent, learning from elder masters, striving ever upward toward artistic peaks, determined not to waste my remaining years, and dedicating all my strength to creating outstanding artistic works.
