Personal Profile
Yu Shuichao, male, born in 1949 in Changge, Henan, hometown of Zhong Yao, the founding master of regular script. Currently residing in Beijing, he is a professional calligrapher with a postgraduate degree in Chinese calligraphy and an in-house disciple of Master Li Yiyeh (Xiao Shihan). Passionate about painting and calligraphy since childhood, he has practiced diligently for decades. He began studying regular script with Liu Gongquan, establishing a solid foundation. After turning thirty, he immersed himself in the works of the Two Wangs, making the "Lanting Xu" and "Shengjiao Xu" his daily practice; after ten years of persistent effort—repeating thousands of times—he eventually gained recognition from experts and society. In middle age, he became a disciple of the great cursive script master Li Yiyeh, devoting himself daily to studying the scripts of Zhang Zhi from the Eastern Han dynasty, tirelessly and obsessively for ten years. For large cursive script, he started with the "Champion Scroll," incorporating elements from Zhang Xu, also studying the Two Wangs, further learning from Huaisu, and absorbing influences from Huang Shangu and Wang Duo—taking strengths and compensating weaknesses, transforming ancient styles into modern expressions and making them his own, gradually forming his distinctive personal style. His cursive script works feature accurate cursive forms, bold and dynamic structures, dramatic rises and falls, and wildly scattered brushstrokes, resembling a mighty river surging forward with overwhelming force. Calligrapher at the Beijing Jinzhengde Calligraphy and Painting Academy and Beijing Huayi Calligraphy and Painting Academy. Published works include "Shixi Qiaoge" (co-authored), "The Art of Yu Shuichao's Cursive Script," and "Yu Shuichao's Large Cursive Thousand Character Classic."
