  Zhang Ning, male, style name Zikang, pseudonym Youlou, is from Shangqiu, Henan. During his university studies, he majored in calligraphy within the Department of Arts. He has a deep affection for poetry and calligraphy. He is a member of the China Hard Pen Calligraphers Association, a member of the Shandong Committee of the China Hard Pen Calligraphers Association, a member of the Shangqiu Youth Writers Association, and a member of the Minquan County Calligraphers Association.
  Calligrapher Yin Weidong: I have known Brother Zhang Ning for nearly two years. Brother Ning excels in calligraphy and loves poetry. In fact, appreciating and evaluating his calligraphic works is not difficult. My impression is that his work is elegant, graceful, powerful yet unconventional. Each line flows smoothly with connected energy; the composition opens and closes harmoniously, and the entire piece is executed freely and cohesively without any slackness—even the colophon is carefully crafted. Generally speaking, he maintains traditional compositional principles. When we look at Brother Ning’s calligraphy, its clarity and elegance preserve the classical expressive model of running and cursive scripts, thus avoiding being perceived as “heretical” or deviant. So what does he change? He shapes his personal style through character structure and brushwork—emphasizing contrast and variation in density, spacing, openness, and closure within characters, while strengthening the force of the brush to pursue a lively, dynamic rhythm. This adds brilliance and appeal to his works. His control over the degree of innovation is appropriate and exquisite, stemming from his insight, sensitivity, and rationality. Indeed, one cannot help but admire him. Brother Ning handles individual characters superbly, groups of characters are perfectly balanced, the brush movements connect naturally, contrasts and echoes interact dynamically, always forming an organic whole—fully revealing subtle artistic mastery. Brother Ning often composes poems with fellow scholars at Nanhua Garden: “Sitting face to face, discussing matters beyond the mundane world, a gown filled with moonlight embraces me”; sometimes escaping worldly noise: “Clearing land beneath the western ridge, fishing by the apricot blossom islet”; finding joy in nature, cultivating emotion in scenes like: “In cold night, birds and sparrows compete for nests; a solitary monk in meditation faces a small plum blossom.” His refined verses and elegant sentiments trace back to the Tang and Song dynasties; his tone is lofty and ancient, echoing the spirit of the Wei and Jin periods. Perhaps this hints at the renewed glory of Shangqiu, long celebrated in history, and also reflects the rising tide among the Chinese people toward the revival of traditional culture.

I deeply understand that he is a man of genuine temperament—kind to others, steady and skillful in handling affairs, diligent in study, eager to help people, adept at capturing poetic inspiration from daily life, and skilled in expressing the bittersweet flavors of life through the sentiment of poetry. Reading his poems brings comfort to the soul and endless imagination. Brother Zhang Ning diligently writes and continuously climbs the peaks of art. He is sharp-minded, optimistic, open-hearted, and approachable, dedicating all his energy and devotion to the pursuit of art.  As Zhang Ning persistently seeks evolution in his calligraphic art, he has won numerous awards in city and provincial exhibitions. His works have been widely promoted on cultural websites and public accounts. His regular script draws from the simple brush techniques and varied brush momentum of Wei steles. His running script takes Wang Xizhi and Dong Qichang as models, characterized by a light and ethereal style. His cursive script follows the models of Wang Xizhi and Huai Su, guided by a free and smooth style, emphasizing exploration of rules and understanding of artistic flavor, thus progressing toward integrating ancient methods into new expressions and generating new techniques beyond traditional aesthetics.  The achievements Zhang Ning has attained are evident to all. Yet he continues to live a calm artistic life, devoting himself quietly to study—an attitude truly worthy of admiration. Wishing him ever greater strides on his artistic journey!
   Dr. Yeh Ching-Hung, Far East University, Taiwan: With a stroke of the brush, history stretches far; strength and rhythm are well-balanced. Seeking fellow literati to discuss ink art, meaning flows between the lines and letters.
   Won the "Municipal Excellence Award" in the 2014 National Youth Essay Competition on the theme "Beautiful China, My Chinese Dream."  His poem "For the Teacher" was published in the May 29, 2018 issue of "Shandong Heze Daily."  Received the "Silver Award in the Calligraphy Category" at the 14th (National) Youth Outstanding New Talent Selection Contest hosted by the Dandelion Foundation.  Won the "Second Prize in Calligraphy" at the Second "Luoma Garden Cup" Competition hosted by the Shangqiu Municipal Education Bureau.  During a research visit to Taiwan in 2018, he promoted cultural exchange across the strait, engaging in calligraphy exchanges with local elders in Xinshe Community, Tainan City, which was later reported by Taiwan's "Chung Hwa Daily News."  In August 2019, won the online calligraphy voting second prize awarded by Nandian Technology Network Co., Ltd., titled "Artist of Ink and Color."  In November 2019, his work "Sentiment of the Long March" was recognized as a "Mei Du Chuan Xi Work" by the Confucius Foundation of China.  In January 2020, won the title of "Excellent Lecturer" in the "Green Vine Star" selection event "One Minute on Stage."
