Fan Wenbo, born in 1938 in Yanshan, Cangzhou, Hebei, graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He is a senior high school teacher and former vice principal. Currently serves as an artistic advisor to the Cangzhou Local Calligraphy Association.
Since childhood, he has been deeply passionate about calligraphy art, and even after retirement, he has continued to practice diligently. He has carefully studied calligraphy theory and ancient steles and rubbings, thoroughly mastering the brush techniques of past masters. For many years, he has inherited traditional ink methods while capturing the spirit of the times. He has extensively copied various steles and rubbings, absorbing the strengths of numerous schools. His regular script draws its structure from Ouyang Xun and its bone strength from Liu Gongquan; his running and cursive scripts follow the styles of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, successfully forming an artistic style characterized by freshness, agile brushwork, mature strokes, and substantial composition.
Calligraphy is a traditional art of the Chinese nation. In recent years, Fan’s running script works have won multiple awards.
In 2013, he was awarded the Gold Prize in Calligraphy at the “Chinese Sunset Red” Cultural Cup National Senior University Art Competition. He was honored with the title of “Model of Chinese Sunset Red Culture” by the Beijing Hanlin Guoxia Cultural Development Center, organizing committee of the National Senior University Art Competition.
He has devoted his entire life to the art of calligraphy, educating countless students, and was one of the early mentors of the renowned painter and calligrapher Liu Shugang. Throughout his life, he has worked tirelessly, dedicating himself to researching calligraphy, expressing inner emotions, depicting personal experiences, and infusing his works with profound sentiment and inspiration. This fully reflects the older generation of artists’ relentless pursuit of history, nature, life, and art, achieving remarkable accomplishments worthy of admiration. His published collection, “Calligraphy Works by Fan Wenbo,” includes regular, running, and cursive scripts covering diverse content and varied styles, with lively and fluent brushwork, neat characters, and a perfect fusion of spiritual creativity and artistic expression.
In 2017, he collaborated with his student Liu Shugang to establish Juxiange Calligraphy and Painting Culture. Although now in his eighties, he continues to strive passionately in the ocean of art.
