 Zhang Xiang, styled Ze’nan and pen-named Xiaoshui, male, born in 1940, native of Guangzong County, Hebei Province. Currently serving as a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, member of the Hebei Calligraphers Association, director of the China Senior Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, honorary president of Yannan Calligraphy and Painting Academy, vice president of the World Chinese Literature and Art Research Institute, member of the China Culture and Art Development Promotion Association, committee member of the Chinese Large-Character Calligraphy Committee, and honorary chairman of the Xingtai Cultural Exchange Association. Mr. Zhang Xiang received early education at home and was instructed by his maternal uncle, Wang Peitang (also known as Wang Xuanmin), a renowned calligrapher from Beijing in the 1950s. He devoted himself to studying classical stele inscriptions and calligraphy models, gaining profound insights. Proficient in regular, cursive, clerical, and seal scripts, he is especially accomplished in running-cursive script. His running-cursive script is elegant and unrestrained; his regular script balances strength and grace, earning high praise from contemporary calligraphy circles. His works won the Silver Award in the 1995 National Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Carving Art Competition; in 1996, he received the First Prize in Hebei Province’s “Revitalizing China through Science and Education” Grand Competition, and in the same year was included in Selected Works of Modern Chinese Calligraphers and Painters and The Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Calligraphers and Painters; in 1997, his biography was included in Who’s Who in the World, and he was appointed as an advisor; in 1998, he won the International Gold Award at the 2nd World Chinese Art Competition held in Thailand and was conferred the title of “Outstanding World Chinese Artist”; in 2000, he was included in the World Collectors’ Edition of Chinese Calligraphy Masters: Exhibition of Works, which was exhibited at the Beijing National Art Museum of China; in 2012, he successfully held a solo calligraphy exhibition at the Hebei Provincial Museum, receiving high acclaim from provincial leaders and all sectors of society. His works have been collected and exhibited in multiple countries including Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Mr. Zhang Xiang’s works have repeatedly won awards, been exhibited, published, and collected in competitions both within and outside Hebei Province, as well as internationally.
