Personal Profile
Yan Jiang, male, Han ethnicity, also known as Ya Hanzi and Ling Kong, graduated in 1992 from the Chinese Painting Department of China Correspondence University of Calligraphy and Painting. A native of Chongli, Hebei, he is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Currently, he holds the title of First-Class Hard-Pen Calligrapher of the Contemporary Hard-Pen Calligraphers Association, is a member of the National Postal Calligraphy and Fine Arts Association, a member of the Creation Department of the China Contemporary Youth Calligraphy Association, Deputy Secretary-General of Zhangjiakou Shanyu Culture and Arts Association, founder of Luncai Academy’s Yumo Society, a member of the Zhangjiakou Calligraphers Association, and formerly served as the inaugural Secretary-General of the Chongli Calligraphy, Painting and Photography Association and researcher for the “Chongli Cultural and Historical Series.”
Since childhood, I have been passionately devoted to the art of calligraphy and painting. In my early years, I studied under masters Liu Yongyi, Dong Shanming, and Wang Zhiliang, later receiving guidance from numerous renowned artists, from whom I learned profoundly and benefited greatly. In my calligraphy studies, I focused on regular script styles of Ouyang Xun and Yan Zhenqing, and followed the traditions of the Two Wangs for running and cursive scripts; later, I particularly favored the wild cursive styles of Zhang Xu and Mi Fu. My painting primarily centers on flowers and birds. I believe that only cursive script in calligraphy can directly express one’s emotions and inner rhythms, much like the rhythm of dance. However, I do not wish to be confined by the achievements of ancient artists; instead, I seek personal enlightenment in art, pursuing a bold, rugged, and natural style—refusing to be a mere imitator, and aspiring to carve out my own unique artistic realm. My self-created “chopstick hard-pen calligraphy,” with its distinctive personal characteristics, has received recognition from peers.
I am skilled in exterior and creative design; my creatively designed “Postal and Telecommunications Playing Cards” have been granted a national patent. My calligraphy and fine art works have been exhibited, collected, and published both domestically and internationally, and featured in various newspapers and periodicals. In 1990, I won an Excellence Award at the International Calligraphy Competition held in Xi’an, and my work was subsequently exhibited in Japan. In 1992, I won First Prize in the National Calligraphy Competition hosted by People’s Posts and Telecommunications Newspaper. In 1993, I received an award at the “Selected Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Mao Zedong’s Birth,” organized by the Ministry of Culture and other institutions, and my work was permanently collected by the organizing committee. In August 2005, I won the Fine Art Award at the “Praying for World Peace and Jointly Promoting China’s Revival” Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, organized by the Hebei Provincial United Front Work Department, Hebei Provincial Religious Affairs Bureau, Hebei Buddhist Association, Daoist Association, Islamic Association, Catholic Association, and Christian Association to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance. In 2008, I won a Silver Award in the Beijing Olympic Calligraphy Competition; that same year, my work was selected by the Ziyun Calligraphy and Painting Society for participation in an international exchange exhibition of calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. I was specially invited to inscribe multiple mastheads for People’s Posts and Telecommunications Newspaper and the masthead for Zhangjiakou’s “Today’s Qiaodong.” My artworks have been published in People’s Posts and Telecommunications Newspaper, Liaoning Daily, Zhangjiakou Daily, and included in publications such as Contemporary Hard-Pen Calligraphy Compendium, Selected Works of Contemporary Chinese Calligraphers and Seal Carvers, Collection of Postcard Messages, Yanghe Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Carving, Profiles of CPPCC Members (Hebei Volume), and Art Collection of Zhangjiakou CPPCC Members (Harmony).        I have also donated numerous calligraphy and painting works to various public welfare organizations, which were auctioned publicly in charitable events, with all proceeds entirely devoted to public welfare causes. In 2016, I was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Public Welfare Individual” by the Qiaodong District Civilized Office, Disabled Persons’ Federation, Women’s Federation, and Love Without Boundaries Public Welfare Promotion Association of Zhangjiakou City.
