Personal Profile
Liu Chuanhai, childhood name Yongxin, also known as “Desert North Gray Wolf,” studio name “Wuwei Cottage.” Currently residing in Cangzhou, he is a professional painter. Born in the beautiful grassland pearl of Inner Mongolia — Manzhouli City, Hulunbuir — he began learning painting at the age of seven under family influence. The vastness of the grasslands and the bold folk customs of the grassland peoples deeply shaped his unrestrained and free-spirited character since childhood, which is also reflected in his painting style: unrestricted and spontaneous. He initially undertook systematic training starting with Western foundational disciplines such as sketching and quick drawing, and later selected traditional Chinese national art from among oil painting, printmaking, and Chinese painting, focusing primarily on freehand landscape, figure, and animal subjects, especially excelling in depictions of Zhong Kui. In 1990, he graduated with outstanding achievement from Hulunbuir Art Academy. During this period, he participated multiple times in calligraphy and painting exhibitions organized by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hulunbuir League, and various banners and cities, receiving widespread acclaim. Mr. Has Chaolu once commented in earlier years: “His brushwork is bold and unconstrained, incorporating cursive script techniques with unrestrained fluidity.” His early works are collected by the Hulunbuir Mammoth Grassland Culture Museum. Later, due to work-related reasons, he moved to Cangzhou, Hebei, where he met bird-and-flower painter Mr. Chen Jinsheng beside the ancient Grand Canal and studied bird-and-flower painting under his guidance. He was also introduced by Mr. Chen to study landscape painting under landscape painter Mr. Xing Shuquan. In 2010, his works were appraised and valued by the Beijing Huawen Dongfang Art Authentication Center. In recent years, he has received careful guidance from teachers Gu Qingjiao and Yin Mo, and his painting style has become increasingly distinctive: his bold freehand figures and animals feature vigorous, daring brushwork; his splash-ink and splash-color landscapes convey profound, unrestrained artistic conceptions; his meticulous bird-and-flower compositions exhibit rigorous layouts and delicate brush techniques. His works are deeply appreciated and recognized by fellow artists, teachers, friends, and numerous calligraphy and painting collectors. In calligraphy, he studied under Mr. Feng Yupō, former president of Canghai Calligraphy and Painting Academy, achieving modest success while never forgetting his original aspirations.
