Personal Profile
Liu Wenliang, born in October 1964, is a native of Longyao County, Xingtai City, Hebei Province. He is a National First-Class Artist, Director of the Hebei Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Academy, and member of the China Senior Calligraphy Association. He graduated from Longyao Normal School in 1984 and from Hebei Normal University in 1988. Inspired by Zhao Qingshi (member of the China Folk Literature and Art Association, member of the Hebei Artists Association, and visiting professor at Hebei Academy of Fine Arts), he became deeply devoted to calligraphy. Adhering to classical traditions, he has practiced calligraphy daily for decades, studying the works of masters such as Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Zhao Mengfu, Wen Zhengming, and Sun Guoting, absorbing the essence of ancient sages. He studied under the renowned calligrapher and painter Han Zhenxue (formerly Director of the Xingtai Regional Calligraphers Association, member of the Hebei Calligraphers Association and Hebei Artists Association). Under Master Han’s careful guidance, his calligraphy skills progressed rapidly.
Liu Wenliang maintains a rigorous work ethic, is humble and low-key, avoids self-promotion, and focuses intently on his artistic practice. Initially, he deliberately avoided participating in various calligraphy and painting exhibitions. Friends once took some of his discarded regular script practice pieces and submitted them anonymously to exhibitions. Unexpectedly, in 2016, one of his regular script works was exhibited at the “Commemorative Calligraphy Exhibition for the 115th Anniversary of Comrade Chen Yi’s Birth” and collected by the organizing committee. In 2018, he won the 4th National Senior Calligraphy and Painting Wang Xizhi Style Award at the China Senior Calligraphy and Painting Competition. His works are meticulously crafted and highly praised both within and beyond the calligraphy and painting circles, especially favored by entrepreneurs. His running script and cursive script works particularly embody the stylistic legacy of the Two Wangs—respecting tradition while not being bound by it, with bold brushwork, graceful fluidity, natural expressiveness, and powerful strokes. His works are widely collected by overseas Chinese in countries such as the United States, Singapore, and Canada, and are deeply cherished by the international Chinese community.
