Huang Yaodong, originally named Huang Dong, with courtesy name Yaodong and pseudonyms Mo Ru and Xin’an Jushi. Also known as the master of Moyi Hall, with studio names “Xixin Studio” and “Tingyu Pavilion.” His ancestral home is in Hebei Baoding; he was born on December 2, 1970, in Inner Mongolia. He is a renowned contemporary painter-calligrapher and calligraphy educator. Currently, he is a member of the International Calligraphy and Painting Art Research Association, a contracted calligrapher-painter of Moyuanzhai Cultural Network, a registered teacher of the China Calligraphers Association, a member of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, a member of the Mao Zedong Calligraphy Association of China, a member of the China Hard Pen Calligraphy Association, a registered senior calligraphy teacher of the China Hard Pen Calligraphy Association, an examiner for youth and adolescent calligraphy and painting art assessments, and an artistic signature designer. He excels in both literature and painting, is devoted to Confucian philosophy, and was an early promoter of the Global Classics Recitation Project.
Mr. Huang Yaodong has been passionately fond of calligraphy and painting since childhood, drawing nourishment from traditional Chinese ancient masters’ brush calligraphy. He has diligently copied and deeply studied famous historical calligraphy works for many years, building a profound foundation. With over a decade of experience in calligraphy education, he set a lofty ambition in his youth: “I shall not rest until my calligraphy astonishes the world.” He is proficient in both brush and hard-pen calligraphy, skilled in all scripts, especially excelling in running and cursive scripts. His stylistic sources are broad, his styles diverse, and he is particularly adept at creating works spanning dramatically different styles.
In 2007, he won the gold award in the National Calligraphy and Painting Competition Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s Return. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and influence in the field of calligraphy and painting, he was honored with the title “Outstanding Contemporary Chinese Calligrapher and Painter.” In the same year, he participated in the National Calligraphy and Painting Competition Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Liberation Army, winning the gold award for “Ode to the Military Spirit,” and was awarded the honorary title of “Outstanding Artist Supporting the Military and Loving the Country.”
In August 2016, he graduated from the Copying and Creation Advanced Training Class at the Calligraphy Training Center of the China Calligraphers Association. He achieved outstanding results in the First “Calligraphy Impression Cup” National Hard Pen Calligraphy Competition, receiving the “Outstanding Instructor” and “Outstanding Group Award,” making significant contributions to the popularization and education of calligraphy.
