Zhang Youcai, born in July 1977, is a native of Chicheng County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province.
Since childhood, he has been fond of calligraphy practice. In his calligraphy studies, for regular script (kaishu), he mainly focused on Liu Gongquan’s “Xuanmi Pagoda Stele” and “Shence Army Stele” from the Tang Dynasty, supplemented by Yan Zhenqing’s “Yan Qinli Stele” and “Duobao Pagoda Stele”; for running script (xingshu), he primarily studied the “Preface to the Sacred Teachings of Wang Xizhi,” compiled by the monk Huiren of Hongfu Temple during the Tang Dynasty, and Zhao Mengfu’s “Ode to the Luo River Goddess,” “Ode to a Leisurely Dwelling,” “Ode on Returning Home,” and “Ode to the Red Cliff” from the Yuan Dynasty; for cursive script (caoshu) and the “Thousand Character Classic,” he studied Ming Dynasty masters Han Daoheng and Dong Qichang. In 2020, he joined the China Calligraphers Association, was honored with the title “People’s Calligrapher,” and was listed on the Calligraphy Masters Website. His calligraphy has received widespread acclaim and is collected by numerous calligraphy enthusiasts.
