Dou Qingsheng, courtesy name Hanqing or Hanqing, owner of Miaomo Caotang Studio, born in 1965, originally from Hebei Botou. Since the age of six, he has practiced calligraphy under the guidance of his grandfather Dou Rutian and father Dou Kunshan. Whether during his student years, military service, or after transitioning to civilian work, he has consistently pursued calligraphy as his lifelong passion and aspiration. He has explored all major script styles—regular, cursive, clerical, seal, and running—with particular mastery in cursive script. Studying ancient masters diligently through copying stele and scroll models, he remains unmoved by the prevailing trend of seeking quick success and instant benefits. He devotes every spare moment to honing his foundational skills. His cursive script primarily follows Wang Xizhi, supplemented by studying works of masters such as Huaisu, Zhang Xu, and Zhiyong. He meticulously analyzes structure and form, emulating with both heart and hand, drawing widely from diverse strengths, integrating various styles into a unified whole. His style is serene and natural, with graceful, restrained brushwork that is vigorous yet elegant. He has participated in provincial calligraphy competitions five times, winning first prize twice, second prize twice, and third prize once. His works appeal to both connoisseurs and general audiences; numerous pieces have been collected by prominent figures and calligraphy enthusiasts at home and abroad. Member of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, Deputy Director of Shijiazhuang Branch of Xiong’an Cultural and Art Development Center under the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, Executive Director of Hebei Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Art Research Institute, Member of Hebei Calligraphers Association, and Member of Shijiazhuang Calligraphers Association.
Starting from January 1, 2018, the pricing for Mr. Dou Qingsheng’s calligraphy works is set at 2,000 to 6,000 RMB per square chi (price determined according to number of characters and quality of the work); works smaller than one square chi will be charged as one square chi. For plaques, signs, or institutional names: 1,000 RMB per character.
