Liu Yifeng, style name Hengyuan, pseudonyms: "the Commoner Scholar", "the Master of Xianjue Studio", "the Master of Guoyi Workshop", "the Hermit of Half-Isolation" etc., born in 1963 in Guangzhou area. From his youth, he has been interested in art and literature history. He graduated from Shenzhen University in 1987 with a major in Applied Arts. After that, while engaging in the design of applied arts, he began to study calligraphy, painting, and art theory, and also studied the "Jing Shi Zi Ji" (Classics, Histories, Philosophical Works, and Literature). Gradually, his research shifted from Western culture and art to Chinese culture and academic art. He has in-depth and unique research on the theories of "Wei-Jin Mysticism", "Song-Ming Rationalism and Mind School", and especially the comprehensive theories of traditional Chinese "Scholar Painting", such as Dong Qichang's "North-South School Theory" and "Shitao's Painting Theory", as well as the theories of famous modern and contemporary painters such as Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, and Fu Baoshi.

Mr. Liu Yifeng has also received guidance from senior artists and scholars such as Guan Shan Yue (deceased), Li Xiongcai (deceased), Huang Duyi (deceased), Yan Jiyuan (deceased), Wang Guichen, and Liu Jirong. This has enabled him to further improve his artistic creation and academic theory, and he has built his own theoretical framework based on traditional Chinese aesthetic thoughts and the academic spirit of "drawing conclusions from history". He closely combines "art" with "the Way", gradually forming his own system of art theory. He has always adhered to the guiding principles of "using the ancient for the present, using the foreign for China, innovating by discarding the old and bringing forth the new", and "learning from the past to open up the future" throughout his theory. Many famous commentaries on modern and contemporary Chinese artists have been written by him.
His writings are full of knowledge and profound insights, yet expressed in an easy-to-understand language. His readers have praised his articles as "grand in style yet delicate in details, modern yet with an ancient flavor..." and they often feel that "his brush carries emotion", and he frequently offers in-depth criticisms of the negative phenomena existing in today's Chinese art circles.
Mr. Liu Yifeng was the Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Calligraphy and Painting Art Professional Committee, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the magazine "Guangdong Calligraphy and Painting" published by China News Press, General Editor of the academic section of "China Calligraphers and Painters Daily", Editor-in-Chief of the magazine "China Art", Art Advisor of the magazine "Chinese Celebrities", Vice Chairman of the Cultural and Artistic Committee of the "Happiness Guangdong" Organizing Committee, Vice Chairman of the China Arts and Crafts Association and Director of the Chinese Painting Art Committee, Director of the Academic Theoretical Research Office of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association.
