Personal Profile
Zhang Chunlin, male, born in 1976, now resides in Chengyang, Qingdao. He is a graduate of the Chinese Painting program at Shandong Normal University. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Qingdao Finger Painting Association, the Director of the Zhang Fushan Finger Painting Art Research Institute, the Chairman of the Chengyang Finger Painting Association, the Acting Chairman of the Jimo Finger Painting Association, the Director of the Finger Painting Arts Committee of the Qingdao Handicraft Association, and a inheritor of the "Zhang's Finger Painting" in Qingdao. He has established the Zhang Xiaoshi Finger Painting Art Studio, mainly engaged in the creation and inheritance of finger painting. He also studies traditional ink painting on a regular basis. Whether it is painting, coloring, or calligraphy, he insists on completing everything with his fingers. Although this makes the work more difficult and time-consuming, it has made his unique artistic language of finger painting increasingly prominent.
He has systematically studied the techniques of ancient finger painting, drawing inspiration from the style of the late famous master Zhang Fushan, continuing the playful brushwork of the renowned Qing Dynasty finger painter Gao Qipei, and applying his solid foundation in brush painting. Through continuous improvement, he eventually formed a unique finger painting style.
Finger painting is a precious intangible cultural heritage with a history of 1,500 years. It originated in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. This technique has been popular among the people in the Jiaodong Peninsula and the Chengyang area for a long time. Among these, "Zhang's Finger Painting" is the most ancient and beautiful, and the most representative, hence the name "Zhang's Finger Painting." The main themes of Zhang's finger painting works are landscapes, flowers, and birds, occasionally including traditional opera figures. They are distinctive, elegant, and have a refined, ancient charm, representing an important part of folk art in the Jiaodong region. In recent years, the technique of Zhang's finger painting has been frequently interviewed and reported by multiple TV stations and news media, adding a vibrant color to the local area. As a valuable intangible cultural heritage from the folk, finger painting currently faces the risk of nearly being lost due to its difficulty in learning and imitating, high starting point, and long learning period.
The themes of Zhang's finger painting mostly come from traditional Chinese painting and folk art. Using methods such as dotting, rubbing, outlining, and pressing with fingers, the ink is applied directly, making the ink as flexible as the fingers and the fingers as responsive as the intention. Thus, the works have a heavy, ancient, fresh, and powerful sense of ink, with grand composition and deep texture. Finger painting does not require the use of a brush; it is directly drawn with fingers dipped in ink on paper.
Zhang Xiaoshi, as a representative inheritor of Chengyang's finger painting skills, has undergone three generations of transmission and has spent several years refining his art and maintaining his beliefs. His works have frequently won awards in national competitions, earning high recognition and praise from experts in the same industry domestically.
Qingdao Finger Painting Association was established in 2017. Because Zhang Xiaoshi, a Chengyang artist, is representative and has a high level of fame, he was elected as the association chairman. This undoubtedly laid a good social foundation for further promoting Qingdao's Zhang's Finger Painting and contributed to the cultural and artistic prosperity of the local area.
In October 2019, to provide free teaching and popularization of China's intangible cultural heritage - finger painting, the Zhang Xiaoshi Finger Painting Studio was established, marking a new starting point for inheriting the "Zhang's Finger Painting" skill.
In December 2019, the Zhang Fushan Finger Painting Art Research Institute was established. It is a research institution dedicated to promoting and inheriting the art of the finger painting master Zhang Fushan, and it is currently the only art institution in the country that promotes Zhang Fushan's finger painting skills. All members unanimously elected Mr. Zhang Chunlin (Zhang Xiaoshi) as the director of the Zhang Fushan Finger Painting Art Research Institute.
In August 2020, the Chengyang Finger Painting Association was established at Run Dong Tea City, and Zhang Chunlin was elected as the chairman of the district finger painting association. In July 2020, Zhang Chunlin was elected as the acting chairman of the Jimo District Finger Painting Association.
In June 2020, the Finger Painting Arts Professional Committee of the Qingdao Handicraft Association was established, and Zhang Chunlin was elected as the director of the professional committee. He stated: At present, the country is vigorously advocating the "craftsman spirit." The finger painting technique itself involves direct contact between the fingers and the artwork, while endowing the work with certain ideological content, artistic connotation, and the style of humanistic painting. Through the expressive freedom of ink in the work, the accidental beauty of the fingertip creation can be fully displayed.
