Zhang Chaoyang
Personal Profile
Absorbing the strengths of many schools to forge a personal style ——Remembering Zhang Chaoyang, a renowned calligrapher and painter from Xinjiang It is well known that Xinjiang is the most famous and ancient origin of Hetian jade in China. Xinjiang is also renowned for its grapes and Hami melons. Locals often speak highly of the "falling-hair" Hami melon, regarded as the king among kings of Hami melons. Its unique flavor combines creamy notes with hints of lemon, yet all varieties are sweet as honey, vibrant in color, refreshingly crisp, and nutritionally rich. Zhang Chaoyang, a distinguished painter and calligrapher from Xinjiang, was born in 1973 in Gangu County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. From childhood, he developed a passion for painting, calligraphy, seal carving, root carving, and jade carving. In 1990, he traveled to Xinjiang to study architecture at a technical school, later completing a three-year adult education program at Dalian University of Technology. After graduation, he worked in technical management at a construction company in Urumqi, Xinjiang. During his years working in Xinjiang, he continuously studied various painting and calligraphy techniques, achieving remarkable results. Living long-term in this city fragrant with fruits, Zhang was deeply influenced by the traditional Xinjiang artists' depictions of Hami melons. Building upon their techniques, he persistently explored, carefully contemplated, respected tradition without being bound by it, absorbed the strengths of diverse schools, and diligently practiced—gradually developing his own distinctive style, which has earned recognition from peers in the art world. His paintings of Hami melons exude vividness, elegant coloration, aesthetic pleasure, and strong individuality, offering unique charm. In his technique, he uses large soft-bristled brushes to blend colors and diluted ink into a muted yellow, applying an overall wash over the melon skin. Once dry, he adds details to the skin's patterns using a mixture of yellow and ink to create naturally varying depths of tone. On canvas, the Hami melons bloom quietly, displaying hues of yellow and green, surrounded by lush, swaying leaves brimming with vitality, enhancing the warm and inviting atmosphere. His masterpieces skillfully combine meticulous detail with expressive brushwork, demonstrating profound mastery of form and ink technique, appealing equally to refined and popular tastes, bringing comfort and joy to viewers. From his brushwork, form, composition, and artistic conception, Zhang’s works reveal deep cultural cultivation and solid technical foundation, imbued with the marks of the times and distinct contemporary characteristics. Thus, they not only reflect his personal artistic style but also embody the aesthetic aspirations of a specific era. His creations depict everyday scenes with simplicity and sincerity, devoid of artificiality—emphasizing both fine detailing and holistic impact, conveying the artist’s profound affection for his homeland and its people. His individuality and talent shine through prominently. Beyond technical execution, the most essential aspect of painting lies in creating new aesthetics, establishing novel forms, and forging a unique style that expresses spiritual pursuit. Through artistic refinement, he presents a beautiful landscape steeped in nostalgic sentiment. With simplified forms, subtle coloring, and decorative brushstrokes, his compositions become delightfully intriguing and profoundly meaningful. When viewed, these Hami melon paintings instantly invigorate the spirit. Their radiant, varied colors and fluid, graceful strokes radiate boundless vitality and energy. He uses rich ink washes to render the leaves, lending them life—each leaf seems to lift its face, blooming merrily as if cheering and singing, adding dynamism to the scene. This lively and poetic ink painting delivers not only unique aesthetic beauty but also unmistakably refined and delicate artistic sensibility.
