Liu Yi, male, Han ethnicity, from Lixian, Longnan, Gansu, a member of the Communist Party of China, pen name Shan Ye, known as Master of Ink and Emotion. He is currently a member of the Beijing Contemporary Ink and Art Culture Academy. In 2020, his calligraphy works were awarded the title of First-Class Artist by the China Calligraphy and Painting Professional Title Evaluation Center.
His works won the Third Prize in the Third National Exhibition of Chinese Famous Personalities, Calligraphy, and Fine Arts. In 2006, he won the Gold Award in the Beijing New Year's Eve - First National Literati Couplets Calligraphy Competition. In 2015, he won the Gold Award in the Eastern Beauty National Poetry and Calligraphy-Painting Competition. In October 2019, he won the Second Prize in the Calligraphy and Painting Competition held in Moyu County, Hotan Region, commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China.
Since childhood, he has been passionate about painting and calligraphy, with profound calligraphic foundations. His creative style is free and unrestrained, yet strictly disciplined—robust without losing elegance, agile without sacrificing solemnity. He emphasizes absorbing the strengths of all historical schools and styles, embracing diverse themes, conceptions, compositional structures, and artistic realms, integrating them into his own work. In recent years, he has focused on extending the artistic conception of calligraphy and exploring its deeper cultural dimensions, infusing his works with historical depth and contemporary relevance, thereby pioneering a new aesthetic in calligraphy. He has long adhered to the teaching: “Learn from the ancients, emulate their calligraphy, and ultimately form your own style,” practicing diligently year after year without ceasing. Liu Yi is approachable and kind-hearted, naturally studious and deeply devoted to calligraphy throughout his life. He prefers direct emotional expression in creation; whether at any time or place, when he spreads out a sheet of plain paper, dips his brush in rich ink, his strokes flow like clouds and water, radiant and spirited, the brush tip dancing fluidly, controlling left and right, every dot and stroke executed with precision, never careless or lax—the rules of calligraphy fully embodied within his fingers and wrists. The flowing lines and elegant ink traces permeate the paper, emitting a refreshing fragrance. The charm and spirit of calligraphy are displayed with exquisite vigor and brilliance. He says: “The act of writing calligraphy, the brush and ink, express the essence of Chinese culture in its fullest form. Each stroke—whether resembling sitting, lying, walking, standing, bowing, or crouching—fully conveys its intended emotion, yet these strokes, though seemingly contradictory, harmonize beautifully with one another.” Through this rhythmic and expressive writing, Liu Yi’s calligraphy appears vivid and natural, leaving viewers endlessly enchanted.
