Personal Profile
Chen Congyue, styled Kailai, is a native of Putian, Fujian Province. Born in 1970, he is the third-generation inheritor of Qi Baishi's artistic lineage, studying under renowned painters Wei Chuanyi, Chen Bing, and Lin Liangfeng. He has also received guidance from masters such as Lou Shibai, Cui Zifan, and Shi Qi. He specializes in bird-and-flower paintings, landscapes, and Daoist-Buddhist figure paintings.
In 1993, he co-founded the Xiamen Education Painting and Calligraphy Institute with Wei Chuanyi and Mr. Chen Bing.
In 2003, he organized the Xiamen "Sea. Music" Sculpture Exhibition.
In 2006, he hosted the Third Inaugural Conference of the China Artists Association's Chinese Painting Art Committee. He assisted Mr. Chen Bing in publishing the "Cui Zifan Painting Collection" and the "Shi Qi Painting Collection."
Having loved painting since childhood, he has held a brush since age six, continuously engaging in reading, painting, calligraphy, seal carving, restoration and authentication of ancient artworks, as well as studying Buddhism and Daoism—practices he has maintained diligently for decades without interruption. His bird-and-flower paintings inherit the bold freehand style of the Qi school, using ink and color boldly, striving to elevate art above life, capturing subjects in the realm between likeness and unlikeness. In the past decade, he has increasingly focused on landscapes and Daoist-Buddhist figures. He has deeply studied the artistic characteristics of landscape and religious masters from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties, and modern times. By integrating the exquisite brushwork of the Qi school with the styles of various historical masters, he expresses the spiritual essence of nature, aiming to create a refined yet substantial, elegant and noble xiaoqinglü (light green) landscape system; his religious figures follow the same principle. Currently, he is a member of the Xiamen Artists Association and Xiamen Calligraphers Association, serving as Secretary-General of the Xiamen Education Painting and Calligraphy Institute and Secretary-General of the Xiamen Branch of the Fujian Painting and Calligraphy Art Research Society. He is also Director of the Xiamen Hanmoyuan Art Center, Vice President of Beijing Chunzhangzai Painting Academy, and顾问 of the China-Philippines Art Committee. His works have been presented as gifts by Xiamen officials during overseas visits and are collected by consulates of the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and Singapore. Mr. Chen Lifu, a senior figure in Taiwan's Kuomintang,收藏 two of his works and gifted him a calligraphic piece in return.
