Personal Profile
Wei Xinping, born in 1977 in Fujian Nanping, graduated from the Fine Arts Education program at Xiamen University. Later, he studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, attending an advanced research class in traditional Chinese landscape painting! After graduation, he engaged in fine arts education, persistently studying traditional calligraphy and painting while dedicating himself to sketching and creative work. He worked as an art teacher and counselor at the Affiliated Primary School of Nanping Normal College. After five years, he entered the private sector, joining Xiamen International Trade Art Co., Ltd., where he served as Design Director, primarily responsible for new product development targeting European and American markets. Later, he was headhunted by Xiamen International Rota Bath & Sanitary Co., Ltd., serving as a Fashion Product Development Engineer. From 2009 to 2019, he operated a business specializing in antiques, curios, and art collectibles. On October 19, 2019, the "Wei Xinping Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition" opened grandly at Zhangxiong Art Gallery in Xiamen!
He is currently a member of the Fujian Provincial Collection Culture Association, a council member of the Nanping Painting Academy, a member of the Southern Friendship Association of Chinese Calligraphers and Painters, an artist at Wuyi Painting Academy, a member of the Xiamen Artists Association, and a resident scholar of Wucheng Tingyuan Caotang in Xiamen.
With 20 years dedicated to the study of landscape painting, he has deeply researched and learned from ancient masters, especially the Four Monks of the Qing Dynasty, Shi Tao, Ba Da Shan Ren’s landscape and bird-and-flower paintings, and outstanding works by Li Fangying and Zheng Banqiao of the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics. He has drawn nourishment from modern masters such as Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Li Keran, Li Kuchan, and Zhang Ding. He has also conducted intensive studies on the calligraphy of Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, and Tang Bohu. By integrating techniques from both ancient and contemporary masters, he combines expressive forms such as accumulated ink, splashed ink, and焦ink. For years, he has frequently taken his students deep into mountain forests for sketching and field inspiration, using classical brushwork to express the spirit of today's era!
His works have participated in major international art exhibitions, with numerous pieces collected by friends, fans, and art collectors from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. His works have been awarded honorary titles including "Progressive Youth of the New Era – Chinese Ink Painter," "Cultural Exchange Celebrity in Cross-Strait Arts," and "Master Creator of Neo-Classical Ink Painting."
Artistic Style In calligraphy, his regular script directly inherits the legacy of three great Tang Dynasty masters: Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Liu Gongquan! His character composition is rigorous, possessing both strength and substance—exhibiting the solemn simplicity of Northern Wei steles as well as the soft elegance of Han dynasty clerical script, along with the upright resilience of seal script. Later, he studied the styles of Tang Bohu, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, absorbing abundant artistic essence and comprehending the powerful momentum of calligraphy like cascading mountains and flowing water, as well as its delicate grace like dragonflies skimming the surface. His brushwork remains still as a maiden yet moves swiftly like a hare—bold and dynamic, vivid in rhythm, revealing genuine emotion through expressive strokes and ink tones. He upholds Daoist principles of unity with nature, believing that the greatest way is simple and pure, ultimately reaching a state of transcendence! In Chinese painting, he absorbs the aloofness, ethereality, antiquity, simplicity, and transcendental purity of the Four Monks of the Qing Dynasty. He has also carefully studied the masterpieces of the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics, emphasizing innovative spirit, valuing personal life experiences, and strongly expressing free-spirited, soulful expressionism! Recently, he has intensively studied the outstanding works of masters Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Li Kuchan, and Li Keran, absorbing their artistic essence: “richness, liveliness, moisture, romance, innocence,” and the spiritual realm of “courage is precious, soul is essential.” The ink paintings of Scholar Wucheng, whether large-scale landscape scrolls on four-foot xuan paper or small-sized expressive bird-and-flower sketches, alternate between serene valley spirits and dazzling brilliance. They carry not only the subtle scholarly aura of orchids but also the melancholic sentiment of refined literati. His works can be exquisitely detailed to the utmost degree, yet also freely bold and unrestrained, liberating innate nature! Rooted in cultural confidence in Chinese painting, he takes it as his responsibility to “develop Chinese ink painting art,” emphasizing adherence to the principle that “brush and ink should follow the times.” He pursues majestic, rugged, powerful, grand, and moist artistic realms, advocating artistic qualities marked by right understanding, right awareness, positive energy, and noble presence. He promotes independent thinking and exploratory innovation.
