Feng Xiaoyang
Personal Profile
Feng Xiaoyang, styled Kuangfeng, is the President of the Qilu Freehand Tiger Art Research Institute, a council member of the China Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, a member of the China Artists Association, a member of the China Artisans Association, one of the first specially ranked painters of the China Painter Village, an expert receiving special government allowances from the State Council, and the "King of Contemporary Freehand Tiger Painting in China."
Influenced by his family, Feng Xiaoyang developed a deep passion for painting from an early age. He later studied under Hu Shuang’an, a disciple of Zhang Shanzi and a modern master of tiger painting. His creative focus centers on beasts, particularly tigers, for which he has gained fame through his freehand style. His large-scale freehand tigers emphasize the charm and spirit of the tiger, with the eyes serving as the critical focal point—depicting the tiger’s majesty, ferocity, passion, and indomitable courage. In his brushwork, the undulating lines of calligraphy, resembling dragons and snakes in cursive script, capture the texture and structure of the tiger. His brushstrokes are vigorous and rugged, his ink washes rich and powerful, seamlessly integrated and executed in one continuous flow. Through profound accumulation and restrained expression, his ink and brushwork produce extraordinary paintings, endowing his tigers with both form and spirit, vividness, and grandeur, infusing them with humanistic charm and establishing his own artistic signature. He is acclaimed as the "King of Contemporary Freehand Tiger Painting in China." He has been invited to hold exhibitions and give lectures in Canada, India, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. His works have been widely collected both domestically and internationally.
His works have been published or included in collections and publications such as China Calligraphy and Painting News, Collection of Feng Xiaoyang’s Paintings, Encyclopedia of Painters, European Chinese Newspaper, National Art Honor Record, Collection of Master Chinese Painters, and Guangming Daily.
