Gao Yongxiang, styled Rushi, with the studio name "Buyu Xuan," was born in 1939 on the southern slope of Fenglong Mountain in Yuanshi County, Hebei Province, hence known as "Fenglong Mountain Man."
He has been passionately fond of calligraphy and painting since childhood. During his youth, he extensively copied the Jin and Tang dynasty model scripts as well as masterpieces by renowned artists throughout history, absorbing their essence and establishing a solid foundation for artistic creation.
In his mature years, he traveled widely, broadened his horizons, and forged friendships across the land. In Beijing, he studied under Qi Dashou and Liang Shunian, delving into the "Qi School" ink-wash landscape painting and profoundly mastering its ethereal "mist and clouds" aesthetic. He once visited Mr. Yu Xining, receiving his guidance and uniquely capturing the vigorous, "iron-boned" spirit of plum blossoms. His calligraphy integrates styles of Liu, Zhao, and the Two Wangs, developing a distinctive personal style. For over several decades, he has intensively studied the Han dynasty stele inscriptions of Yuanshi—particularly the "Sacrificial Stele of the Three Dukes Mountain" and "Ode to Fenglong Mountain"—and innovatively created the "Great Clerical Script," characterized by its ancient, powerful, rhythmically varied, and freely controlled strokes. In sculpture, he collaborated for several years with Professor Zhang Chang, the "Clay Figure Zhang," developing his own style through concise, exaggerated, and expressive techniques.
His calligraphy, painting, and sculpture mutually reinforce and complement each other, jointly exploring the artistic realm of "drawing inspiration from nature externally, while cultivating inner spiritual insight."
His works have repeatedly won gold medals and first prizes in major domestic and international exhibitions. They have been exhibited in Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and other countries and regions, and collected by numerous foreign art museums. His biography has been included in multiple contemporary authoritative directories and encyclopedias of notable figures. National, provincial, and municipal media outlets have published detailed evaluations and reports on his life and works. He holds the title of National First-Class Artist, and his traditional Chinese painting "Ode to Taihang" is collected by Tiananmen.
Currently, he serves as Honorary Chairman of the China Cultural and Art Development Federation, Invited Consultant of the Singapore Seaside Art Research Center, Invited Artist of the Sydney Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Academy in Australia, Academician of the Chinese Buddhist Art Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Researcher of the China Huaxia Ten-Thousand-Li Journey Calligraphers and Painters Association, Member of the Beijing Generals Calligraphy and Painting Academy, State-Gift Artist, Member of the China Artists Association Hebei Branch, Hebei Provincial Master of Arts and Crafts, and Member of the Hebei Elderly Calligraphers and Painters Research Association.
