 Bi Geng's sayings
Life is like a beautiful and brilliant lily flower, some bear fruit, some are placed in a vase, some are blown into the roadside ditch. I happened to begin to love calligraphy and painting during the three years of natural disaster in the 1960s, eating corn buns, doing unbearable physical labor, suffering from poverty and hunger, I miraculously crawled out of unbearable hardship and returned to the calligraphy and painting art I loved.
It is more like my learning diary than my art resume. After more than 50 years of study and creation, I opened the door to society with my calligraphy and painting works. Through multi-directional participation, I finally changed from an obscure farmer's son to an unknown blade of grass. All the vanity in the resume can only indicate that it is my learning diary of studying calligraphy and painting, which is worth being relieved: it can motivate me to continue to strive harder - because the sea of art has no end, and there is no shore.

Interview of Hai Guohu, the Most Collectible Art Figure of China's Good Brand Calligrapher and painter Hai Guohu is a strict and serious person. When I first met him, I even felt that he was somewhat reserved and dull, which seemed not to match the artist's temperament. But as the interview deepened, I found that this painter born in 1960 poured all his most lively and dynamic mind into his beloved paintings. Therefore, when viewers stand before Hai's calligraphy and painting works, they are inevitably shocked and moved by the rich emotions and profound atmosphere in his works.
Learning from the ancients and practicing diligently, nature as a teacher
Recalling the impression of the charm of calligraphy and painting, although it has long passed, Hai Guohu still cannot help but be excited. Once, as a child, he visited an art exhibition and was deeply attracted by the charm of a landscape painting. His artistic talent in the depths of his soul was activated at that moment. From then on, from elementary school doodling to middle school formal study of calligraphy and painting, he has always been diligent and enthusiastic. Although his study of calligraphy and painting was once interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, it did not shake his sincere heart for calligraphy and painting art.

"Calligraphy and painting art is my beloved career. Because I like it, I have never stopped pursuing it. Interest is the best teacher, which will let you do it naturally without any effort, and often achieve some results."

Systematic study, combined with Hai Guohu's meticulous spirit and serious attitude, enabled him to quickly grasp the core of study. He strictly adhered to traditional steps, focused his mind, and devoted himself entirely to exploring the subtleties of ancient techniques. He knew that this learning process was like tree roots, the deeper the sedimentation, the stronger the root, thus laying a solid foundation for future branches and leaves. "Learning calligraphy and painting, copying is a necessary course. Understanding and mastering the techniques of the ancients, feeling and presenting the atmosphere and rhythm of ancient paintings must be done in both macro and micro readings. This is an essential path that cannot be bypassed or neglected. The better the inheritance work is done, the richer the foundation for innovation will be."
From the ancient calligraphy and painting of Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties to the achievements of modern masters, Mr. Hai Guohu has thoroughly studied and carefully analyzed them. He learned from the ancients with a step-by-step approach, but never fell into the trap of following the old ways. Instead, he used his own ideas, learned from the hearts of the ancients rather than their works. Neither did he go into emptiness and coldness, nor did he lose his individuality. On the basis of inheriting and developing traditional techniques, he widely absorbed strengths, and created from his own inner source, pursuing emotion and spirituality. Ultimately, he formed an elegant and smooth, ethereal and graceful yet not lacking in depth artistic style.
"In the process of copying the ancients, after building a solid foundation, we should move up to the experience and practice of learning from nature. In this process, sketching is very important. In the process of sketching, feel the texture and spatial sense of real nature, understand the spiritual essence of mountains and rivers. When you have a moving experience in 'clearing the heart and savoring the image', then use the techniques mastered in copying to draw and paint different mountain features, and seek breakthroughs in continuous sketching and creation. 'Following the law and preserving the original, change is life,' ultimately achieving the goal of forming one's own style."

Mr. Hai often loves traveling through mountains and rivers. Over the past few decades, his footsteps have already covered the famous mountains and rivers of the motherland, and he has accumulated abundant materials in his chest. He believes that brushwork is limited, while natural images are infinite and vast. Only after experiencing 'searching all the peaks for sketches' of thousands of mountains can one provide an endless stream of inspiration for creating rich, vivid, and full of life works.

Looking at Mr. Hai's landscape paintings, they fully embody the 'Six Principles' proposed by Xie He of the Southern Dynasties, especially the 'Bone Method of Brush Use' and the 'Vitality and Movement'. They also reflect his passionate feelings and reflections on nature. In his free brushwork, one can see traces of calligraphy. When drawing lines, he uses the central tip, round brush, varying in thickness and tone, bold and decisive, each stroke accurate and clear, structure clearly explained, lines firm and powerful, thin and dry showing the danger of tenacity, thick and heavy showing the grandeur. Whether straight or curved, it is all smooth and easy. His ink application presents five colors, varying in density, dryness, wetness, and darkness according to the scene. The foreground is lush, the middle ground is bright and elegant, and the background is misty and vague. Combining the techniques of outlining, brushing, dotting, and coloring in one breath, the layers of brushing and coloring make the details extremely simple and the complex extremely detailed, clearly depicting the grooves and textures of the mountain body and the overlapping and mutual yielding. The structure, distance, and arrangement of the composition are appropriate. Techniques such as outlining, dotting, and breaking through give the quality and volume of the mountains and trees a vividly lifelike effect. It not only brings visual impact with exquisite brushwork and ink, but also creates an immersive experience within the painting. The overall artwork, in its rigorous and unrelenting manner, contains a sense of vitality, freedom, and grandeur, forming a unique "Hai School Style" that is both bold and elegant, straightforward and broad.

Pursuing profit and learning closely, never complacent in research

Master Qi Gong's comments on Hai Guohu's works: He is accustomed to expressing his true feelings directly, his works have no greasy or媚 (flirtatious) aspects, and the picture shows towering peaks, layered mountains, with the ancient and vast feeling of the universe, immediately coming to the eye. His works combine the ancient meaning with the new realm, the southern style with the northern melody, having a strong sense of the times and creativity. He is Hai Guohu, a national painter who expresses his sentiments boldly and broadly.

As the saying goes, "the character is like the person, the painting is like the person." What moves the viewer most in the works of calligrapher and painter Hai Guohu is the elegant and refined style of calligraphy and painting embedded in the thickness. Such a work's atmosphere can bring a peaceful state of mind to the viewer in an instant, and then attract them to pay attention to each point, line, and surface connection and arrangement. From the macro shock, it converges into a subtle taste of the micro, and from the rational observation of the micro, one can see the continuity and stability of the overall momentum of the painting. The presentation of these tiny elements of the painting is not deliberately set up for the viewer, but rather the infection of the creator's cultivated personality. This is not only the embodiment of brush and ink, if further explored, one can feel the humanistic brilliance permeated in the painting. This is a good commentary on the evaluation of "no greasy or flirtatious" about him.
"“Calligraphy and painting art is not just simply writing and drawing, but requires a lifetime of careful management. This process will have loneliness, others' misunderstanding, the temptation of fame and fortune, etc. If one can penetrate and realize, one will reach the pure state of ‘unity between heaven and man’. At that time, everything else is unimportant to you.”
Long-term dedicated study has allowed Hai Guohu to refine his excellent calligraphy and painting skills, and the honors naturally become his well-deserved achievements. Hai Guohu's works have been frequently participated in national painting and calligraphy exhibitions and have won awards. They have been published in magazines such as "China Collection", "China Painting and Calligraphy News", "Art News", Hong Kong "Phoenix Weekly", "Hubei Daily", "China Information News", "Zhejiang Painting and Calligraphy News", and "Cultural Arts News". These demonstrate the influence of Mr. Hai Guohu's calligraphy and painting works as the most collectible art figure of China's Good Brand, which is positive energy in today's era. A sword's edge comes from grinding, and plum blossoms' fragrance comes from the cold.
"“Although I have achieved a little bit now, it is still far from enough in the vast sea of art. The artistic realm of my paintings still needs to be improved, my personality has not been fully expressed, and there are still more knowledge to learn, understand, and practice. Live and learn, my journey of exploration continues.”

For Mr. Hai, who has not yet reached the age of seventy, the current state can be said to be in the "prime of his career" as a calligrapher and painter. His technique is mature enough, and his mentality is also very stable. His perseverance is pushing him to continue his studies without end. Believing that in the future, viewers will be able to appreciate his new artistic realm!"
