Personal Profile
Zheng Shengde, male, art name Moren, Xiangshan Nine Elders. A prominent contemporary Chinese painter and senior art master. Since childhood, he has been deeply passionate about traditional Chinese culture and is the most esteemed disciple of renowned painter Dong Jiquan. His primary focus is on landscape and flower-bird painting. Driven by a deep love for calligraphy and painting, Mr. Zheng Shengde has extensively studied the works of Chinese masters throughout history, mastering the symbolic techniques, brushwork variations, emotional spirit, and profound meanings in traditional Chinese ink and color paintings. He has devoted himself to research, achieving profound insights through simple yet effective methods. He once said: “Chinese painting must embody Chinese characteristics, Chinese symbols, and Chinese language.”   To better inherit Chinese artistic traditions, Mr. Zheng Shengde has traveled across China’s famous mountains and rivers—from south to north—and has also visited Myanmar, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He has admired extraordinary peaks and beautiful waters around the world, absorbing the soul and essence of nature. Wherever he goes, he engages in extensive sketching, undergoing rigorous practice and dedicated study. The grandeur of rivers and mountains comes vividly to life on paper, expressing boundless energy and noble aspirations from within his heart.   Mr. Zheng Shengde’s landscape paintings mainly focus on the western regions of China. His works are vast in scale, full of vitality, radiating a sense of national spirit and masculine strength. In the quiet wilderness, one seems to hear echoes from ancient times and feel the powerful, soul-stirring forces of nature. These are expressive green-blue landscapes featuring dramatic mountain gorges, sailboats, pavilions, and towers. His pieces reveal novelty amidst simplicity, depth within plainness, mystery within lushness, elegance within freedom, blending refinement with accessibility—offering both aesthetic pleasure and spiritual resonance. They exude freshness, natural beauty, and a subtle grace. In landscape painting, he skillfully employs various techniques such as boundary drawing (jiehua), boneless painting (mogu), heavy color (zhongcai), and splashed color (pocai). His compositions are particularly ingenious and innovative; his brushwork is mature and bold, colors daring, and his expression of atmosphere profoundly enhanced—showcasing exceptional technical mastery.   His depiction of tropical rainforests is especially passionate and unique. Mr. Zheng Shengde has pioneered new expressions in depicting Yunnan rainforest landscapes and western Chinese scenery using a distinctive visual language. He infuses the natural models with creativity and talent. His forms are elegant and lifelike, brushwork fresh and magical, colors vibrant, and emotions intense—forming a unique artistic identity. With a poet’s heart, he sings of the charm of Northwest China, portraying the innate goodness, tenderness, and beauty of the nation. This reflects not only a传承 (inheritance) and transcendence of traditional brushwork but also a keen grasp and pursuit of timelessness and national character.   His works have frequently been exhibited and collected in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Korea.
