Huang Baifu
Personal Profile
Huang Baifu has been deeply fascinated by calligraphy and painting since childhood. He began learning calligraphy in his thirties and has remained fully dedicated ever since, practicing daily without interruption. The art community affectionately calls him “Huang Fensi” (Huang the Madman), a nickname Huang greatly appreciates, hence he now signs himself as “Fensi” (the Madman).
Baifu started with seal script and clerical script, carefully studying various steles and rubbings. Initially, he studied the “King of Goguryeo Stele,” deeply grasping its ancient solemnity and purity. Later, he practiced bronze inscriptions, large and small seal scripts, cliff carvings, Han bamboo slips, and silk manuscripts. He especially admires Wu Changshuo’s Stone Drum Script, mastering its rich thickness, elegance, and grand strength. His seal script, at first glance, appears rugged and seasoned, with thick, solid strokes; upon closer inspection, the beginning and ending of each stroke show varied, dynamic changes, while the flow of brushwork is relaxed and smooth, free from stiffness. Within these steady and substantial strokes, occasional dry-brush effects and flying white add a balance of hardness and softness, and contrast between emptiness and fullness.
Baifu was fortunate to meet Mr. Liu Zhanjiang of the Beijing Academy of Painting, whom he respectfully followed as a teacher, and developed a deep friendship with the renowned printmaker Mr. Chao Meihui. Guided by both elder masters, he gained profound insights. In his paintings, Baifu integrates calligraphic techniques, often employing ancient clerical script structure—avoiding flimsy or vulgar styles—and also drawing from modern methods, diligently studying the works of Eight Great Mountain Men, Wu Changshuo, Deng Shiru, and Pan Tianshou, blending the old with the new.
His paintings feature bold, unpretentious ink and brushwork, vigorous yet spontaneous, vivid and unrestrained; compositions are sparse yet elegant, with a fluid and refined style that stands out uniquely. Especially skilled in small-scale works, he often creates profound意境 (artistic atmosphere) with just a few brushstrokes. His calligraphy and painting have repeatedly won national awards, and his works are widely collected by collectors both at home and abroad.
