Personal Profile
Ren Shuzhong: The owner of the studio "Pin Yi Zhai,"Beijing City Chaoyang District calligraphy and painting association member.
Born in 1964 in a village at the foot of the Great Wall in Wanguan District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, my ancestors had no education and made a living by farming. I have loved fine arts and calligraphy since childhood, dreaming of making a career out of it when I grew up. At that time, my family strongly opposed my interest, considering it unproductive, and I also thought it unrealistic and fanciful. Yet for some reason, I was deeply obsessed with this path and couldn't let go. Initially, I used pencils to copy portraits and illustrations from comic books. Later, I switched to watercolors and advertising paints. During the New Year, every household would paste windows and red couplets, so people would come to me to paint window decorations and write Spring Festival couplets.
When I grew older, I coincided with China's reform and opening-up era—farming was hard, tiring, and barely profitable, and being small and weak, I wasn’t suited for heavy rural labor. So I left my hometown and came to Beijing, embarking on a journey to fulfill my dreams and seek development. At first, I worked as a laborer for one month building houses for others, then switched to the industry of painting and decorative coatings. While working, kind-hearted people who saw me as honest, reliable, and kind-hearted introduced me to a partner. By year-end, I married and settled down in Beijing, establishing a life there. From then on, I left the countryside and entered the big city, taking root, growing, blooming, and bearing fruit. In my hometown, this was considered like a fish leaping over the dragon gate—a great achievement and success.
From 1990 to 1992, I studied Chinese painting at the Calligraphy and Painting Correspondence University in Xicheng District, Beijing, as well as attended various training courses. Later, I worked as an art designer in factories or units, doing painting and writing tasks. Over the years, during my free time, I have always been devoted to calligraphy and painting. I have participated in numerous regional and provincial exhibitions and had my works published in books and magazines. I have donated artworks multiple times to disaster relief foundations. I actively engage in community calligraphy and painting activities, contributing my share to the inheritance of China’s cultural arts.
"Pin Yi Zhai" is a pseudonym I chose myself. What does it mean? Throughout my life, I have only two passions—one is calligraphy and painting art, and the other is the Book of Changes (I Ching) and its numerical divination system. Combining these two into one, I use the character “one” (一) to represent it. “Pin” means to taste or savor—meaning to savor both calligraphy and painting art and the Book of Changes. Thus, I named my studio "Pin Yi Zhai."
