 Personal Profile

Deng Mingguang, styled Hanxi, also known as Zao Shu Ju Shi and Zao Shu Cao Tang Zhu, is the director of the Deng Mingguang Calligraphy and Painting Art Museum and a professor of calligraphy art.

He is currently a member of the China Calligraphers Association, the China Artists Association, a national first-class calligrapher, a Chinese state gift artist, a终身院士 (lifetime academician) of the China Junbin Calligraphy and Painting Art Academy, a member of the Wu Men Ba Ya Calligraphy and Painting School, a lifetime academician of the Beijing Huaxia Lanting Calligraphy and Painting Academy, and a senior researcher at the Lushan Mao-style Calligraphy Art Research Institute.

Born into a scholarly family, Deng Mingguang developed a deep passion for calligraphy from an early age under his father's influence. For decades, he has diligently practiced without interruption, absorbing techniques from various masters. He has deeply studied clerical script, regular script, running script, and cursive script, particularly excelling in Ouyang Xun’s regular script, Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi’s running script, and cursive script blending Huai Su and Zhang Xu.Deng Mingguang possesses profound calligraphy skills, mastering the essence of classical styles while maintaining relevance to contemporary times. His study of Ouyang Xun involved meticulous copying and dialogue with the past, transcending millennia. In running and cursive scripts, he learned extensively from great predecessors such as Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Huai Su, Zhang Xu, Sun Guoting, and Zhao Mengfu, while also drawing nourishment from folk calligraphy and other sources. He believes that “there is no fixed teacher—inner inspiration comes from within.” By entering the classics and emerging beyond them, he upholds the principle of “developing through inheritance, innovating through development.” His regular script is dignified, robust, elegant, and solemn, adhering strictly to rules; his running script flows freely, beautifully yet simply; his cursive script is like dragons dancing and phoenixes playing—spontaneous, dynamic, and naturally formed. Deng Mingguang’s insight on calligraphy is this: inheritance corrects one’s inherent character flaws, while innovation represents a refined elevation of character rather than merely exposing original, unrefined traits. With computers and keyboards leading to near abandonment of Chinese handwriting across two generations, Deng Mingguang has long dedicated himself exclusively to calligraphy training. He founded the Deng Mingguang Calligraphy and Painting Art Museum to cultivate calligraphy talent and actively contributes to preserving China’s cultural heritage.
