Personal Profile
Elegant and Refined  The Dignity of a Master----Analyzing the Flower-and-Bird Painter Kong Xianghua from the Beijing-Tianjin School
Flower-and-bird painting is one of the three traditional categories of Chinese painting, encompassing flowers, birds, insects, grasses, trees, feathers, livestock, and wild animals—rich in themes and endless in creative possibilities. When portrayed by artists, these subjects should not merely be objects of depiction but living companions imbued with spirit and thought. Of course, painters standing at the forefront vary across different eras. Kong Xianghua, a representative flower-and-bird painter of the contemporary Beijing-Tianjin School, is certainly worthy of extensive discussion. He excels not only in flower-and-bird painting but also in landscape and figure painting, covering a wide range of fields—a versatile artist with notable influence in today’s art world.
Kong Xianghua, born in 1957, is from Beijing. His studio is named Longbao Tang. He graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts and later studied flower-and-bird painting under Yan Jiarong, daughter of the renowned Beijing-Tianjin School master Yan Bolong. He has won multiple awards, including the China Craft and Art Fair Golden Flower Award and the Outstanding Creation First Prize. In 1985, two of his works received the “National Treasure Treasures” certificate from the Ministry of Light Industry, and they are now collected by the China National Museum of Craft Art.
Mr. Kong Xianghua gradually developed his own distinctive style based on traditional painting techniques, emphasizing tradition, valuing brushwork interest, and pursuing artistic rhythm to achieve profound and elegant compositions that are grand, exquisite, dignified, and full of charm. Through international art exchanges, his works have frequently been selected for both international and domestic exhibitions and published in professional journals. Currently, he serves as a council member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles’ Painting and Calligraphy Exchange Center, vice president of the Beijing Federation of Industry and Commerce Entrepreneurs’ Calligraphy and Painting Association, guest professor at Beijing Union University, and art consultant for the magazine "Chinese Painting Style." He has also been awarded the title of “Famous Chinese Painter” by the Artist Evaluation Committee of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
Mr. Kong Xianghua has successfully inherited the unique style of his great-grandmaster Yan Bolong, just like Yan Bolong himself, continuously exploring and eventually achieving inclusiveness—absorbing the finest elements from Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties, and contemporary flower-and-bird painting methods while integrating his own artistic sensibility. Thus, he became a master in his own right, inheriting the Yan School’s unique “combining meticulous and freehand techniques” approach to flower-and-bird painting, forming an independent style within the Beijing-Tianjin School that stands out and attracts attention.
