Duan Hongbo's Pursuit of Beauty in Art — Dong Zibiao
The diligence of artist Duan Hongbo is well known in the industry, and his artworks, developed through dedicated study, always have some remarkable features. Although Duan Hongbo was born in the south, having lived long in the northwest, his artworks invariably reflect the unique openness and purity of the northwestern man, while also revealing a delicate touch characteristic of southerners.
It can be said that some of his paintings combine meticulous detail with freehand brushwork. In his works, from tiny bees and colorful butterflies to galloping deer and yaks, all limbs are clearly defined, lifelike, harmonizing perfectly with the overall expressive style—lively and beautiful.
Duan Hongbo excels in the use of color in his flower-and-bird paintings, particularly emphasizing ink interest. He employs varying dryness, wetness, density, and lightness of ink to express subtle changes in thickness and freshness, using rich colors to summarize the diverse plants in nature. His peonies, wisteria, and fairy pears are colored vividly and boldly, capturing their essence brilliantly.
Similarly, his landscape paintings result from observing nature and distilling its essence. The compositions include symbolic elements, expressed through techniques such as outlining, texturing, and washing, highlighting the beauty of atmosphere and directly expressing his personal feelings.
His western landscape paintings use bold color blocks to convey a sense of grandeur within him—white, yellow, or red, applied flexibly, subtly highlighted with masterful strokes, always catching the eye. The layered composition is orderly, with upright and interwoven rocks and trees evoking an ancient feeling; the color coordination and composition are reasonable, creating aesthetic appeal. The foreground rocks seamlessly merge with the distant sky, and drifting snowflakes add a unique sense of the western region to viewers.
His paintings particularly emphasize artistic ambiance and charm, some even being uniquely original, appreciated by both refined and common audiences, thereby fully showcasing the spiritual depth and realm of traditional art.
