Personal Profile
Yang Zelin, born in 1934, hails from Yingkou, Liaoning Province, and currently resides at the Bi Shui Manor in Beijing.
He received early family education and studied in a private school, learning calligraphy through self-study. From then on, he practiced calligraphy every day for over seventy years, producing countless works.
His calligraphy excels in regular script, running script, and cursive script. He meticulously studies forms, diligently emulates models, draws widely from various sources, masters all styles, learns from the ancients without being bound by them, and has developed his own unique style. His style is peaceful and natural, with graceful and restrained brushwork, revealing true interest in freedom and subtle depth in tranquility.
Representative works include "Heart Sutra," "Tang Poetry Collection," and "Selected Song Ci Poems."
Mr. Yang Zelin is kind-hearted and broad-minded, embodying the spirit of a hermit who befriends others through ink. He regards spreading calligraphy as his mission and continues to teach personally even at the age of 85. For more than three years, he has voluntarily taught calligraphy enthusiasts every week at the M3 Art Museum in Beijing, rain or shine, conscientiously and diligently—calligraphy as a vehicle for the Dao, virtue and art both refined.
