Personal Profile
Liao Changyu: (pen name, Dayu), from Tengzhou City, Shandong Province. Graduated with a postgraduate degree in economic management, he is a senior political worker engineer, calligrapher, and scholar of calligraphy theory. Early on, he studied under renowned masters, later becoming a disciple of the Chinese calligraphy master and doctoral supervisor Mr. Ouyang Zhongshi. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the China Painting and Calligraphy Research Association, researcher at the China Calligraphy Research Institute, and a first-class painter at the General Painting Academy. He is a member of the China Calligraphy Association, a member of the Shandong Provincial Calligraphy Association, a council member of the Zaozhuang Calligraphy Association, an associate member of the Zaozhuang Artists Association, vice chairman of the Tengzhou Calligraphy Association, and has completed advanced studies in the "Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Advanced Elite Class" at the Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University.
He is now the director of the Dayu Art Studio in Beijing. Teacher Liao Changyu has served nearly 20 years as a People's Congress representative, offering suggestions for social development with notable achievements. Since childhood, he has been passionate about painting and calligraphy, learning from various distinguished teachers and developing his own unique style while also mastering other techniques. He specializes in large seal script, regular script, running script, cursive script, and flower-and-bird painting. In particular, he has conducted in-depth study and copying of large seal script, the running and cursive scripts of the "Two Wangs," Yan-style regular script, Zhang Xu’s and Huai Su’s great cursive script, gaining profound understanding. He systematically studied and explored the theories of major Chinese calligraphers, absorbing their essence and integrating them comprehensively, thus deeply grasping the essence of calligraphy. To further elevate his art, he extensively read books on philosophy, history, economics, literature, natural geography, Tang poetry, Song ci, Yuan qu, Ming-Qing novels, the Thirteen Classics, essays, travelogues, biographies, etc., and has gained a good comparative understanding of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. While reading extensively, he has also traveled across thousands of mountains and rivers, absorbing the essence of nature and incorporating it into his paintings and calligraphy works, making his calligraphy “each piece rhythmic, each character soulful.” His paintings are simple yet vivid, with concise brushwork and profound meaning, giving viewers the feeling that “when one stands before the painting, one feels as if wandering within it.” I feel that Teacher Liao’s paintings and calligraphy have truly reached a realm of divine mastery.
