Zhang Qisheng
Personal Profile
Zhang Qisheng, Han Chinese, born in 1950, is a renowned contemporary calligrapher. He is currently the Vice President of the China Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute, Vice President of the China Collection Association, and a member of the China Elderly Calligraphers and Painters Association. Zhang Qisheng has studied calligraphy for nearly 50 years, specializing in seal script, clerical script, and regular script in the Liu style. At the age of six, through introduction, he traveled south to study under Deng Sanmu, a renowned master calligrapher known as "South Deng, North Qi," and learned seal script under his master for three years. In the early 1960s, as Deng Sanmu's health deteriorated, Zhang Qisheng remained by his side, caring for his master while continuing his calligraphy studies. Zhang Qisheng’s brushwork alternates between the elegant, refined techniques of the帖学 (epistolary school) and the rugged, metallic strokes of the gold-and-stone tradition, presenting a bold, vigorous, and anciently powerful aesthetic. After the age of fifty, he developed a highly distinctive personal style of seal script. His regular script is primarily based on Tang dynasty models, with influences from Northern stele inscriptions, and he excels particularly in small regular script—his works are graceful, fluid, elegant, fresh, rounded, and subtle, exhibiting a gentle beauty without being overly forceful or rigid.
