Lan Yusheng, pen name Moyuan, is a specially designated artist for state foreign affairs and diplomatic gifts of China, a disciple of Zhang Daqian’s lineage, and a direct student of Hu Ruosi. He is a member of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, a charitable artist of the China “Care for the Next Generation” Public Welfare Committee, a National Level One Calligrapher and Painter, a member of the China Artists Association, an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in the UK, a visiting professor, an expert member of the World Education, Science and Culture Organization, a Master of World Peace Art, Honorary President of the Chinese Traditional Cultural Research Association, Deputy Director of the Group and Liaison Department of the China Zhongyuan Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Honorary President of the North China Academy of Painting and Calligraphy Art, Vice President of the China Huaxia Wanlixing Association of Calligraphers and Painters, Council Member of the China Folk Painting and Calligraphy Research Society, Member of the China Writers and Artists Association, and Member of the China Artists Association. He specializes in landscape, floral and bird, calligraphy, figure, portrait, animal, and insect painting, and is acclaimed as a master of both painting and calligraphy. His works are collected by government leaders, museums, and collectors worldwide.
His artworks have been officially appraised by the China Calligraphy and Painting Transaction Appraisal Center at RMB 98,000 per square foot for traditional ink paintings and RMB 78,000 per square foot for calligraphy.
Main Experiences:
Born in Sichuan Chengdu in 1944, currently residing in Beijing. Influenced since childhood by his father's Confucian philosophy, he developed a profound love for calligraphy and painting. In his youth, he studied under the renowned painter Mr. Ma Shufang, learning traditional Chinese ink painting along with Western techniques such as sketching and color theory, laying a solid foundation in both painting and calligraphy.
In 1979, he furthered his studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, followed by enrollment in the Art Department of China Radio and Television University. After graduation, he had the privilege of receiving personal instruction from the master of ink painting, Mr. Hu Ruosi.
Beginning in 1985, he meticulously copied the works of historical masters such as Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Liu Gongquan, Zhao Mengfu, Ouyang Xiu, Mi Fu, Yan Zhenqing, Chen Lian, Ren Bonian, Huang Jun, Dai Dunbang, Liu Kuiying, Huang Zhou, and others. Through this intensive practice, he developed a distinctive personal style in both painting and calligraphy, with his works repeatedly winning awards in domestic and international exhibitions.
Starting in 1994, upon invitation from the China International Calligraphy and Painting Friendship Association and the North American Pacific International Art Development Co., Ltd., he participated in the International Dragon Boat Art Festivals in Australia, the United States, and Canada, as well as the Pacific International Expo in the U.S. His exhibited paintings, including internal-painting works, received high acclaim from artists worldwide and earned him the Special Award for Artistic Excellence, with numerous pieces acquired by collectors from various countries. Representative works include "The Great Wall in Golden Autumn," "Splendid Mountains and Rivers," "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter," "The Rising Sun," "So Lovely Is Our Land," "Good Fortune Arrives," "Harmony in the Family Brings Prosperity," "Everything Goes Well," "Hope and Peace," "Peaceful Spring," "Fu Lu Shou (Fortune, Prosperity, Longevity)," "Guan Yin," "Portrait of Deng Xiaoping Meeting Margaret Thatcher," "Portrait of Lee Kuan Yew (Former Prime Minister of Singapore)," and "Portrait of Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee." Additionally, local media outlets such as "World Journal," "Sing Tao Daily," and "Ming Pao," along with bilingual television networks "New Era," "City TV," and "TVPORBC," conducted special interviews and reports on his work.
His works have been presented as state gifts to foreign governments. "The Great Wall in Golden Autumn" is held in the collection of the Canadian Museum of Art; "Splendid Mountains and Rivers" is in the collection of the British Royal Museum; "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter" is preserved in the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Museum in Taiwan; "Portrait of Deng Xiaoping Meeting Margaret Thatcher" and "The Rising Sun" are housed in the Hong Kong Museum; "Portraits of Thai Royal Dynasties" are collected by the Royal Museum of Thailand; "Good Fortune Arrives" and "Portrait of Lee Kuan Yew" were collected by former Singaporean President Lee Kuan Yew himself.
On September 11, 1996, the works "Portrait of Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee," "The Founding Ceremony," and "Chairman Mao Going to Anyuan" were awarded the Artistic Masterpiece Prize by the Organizing Committee of the Cross-Century Youth Calligraphy and Painting Masterpieces Exhibition hosted by the China Overseas Chinese Literature and Art Association.
On June 24, 1996, the paintings "Ode to Yan'an" and "The Red Road of the Long March" were awarded the Special Artistic Award by the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Calligraphy, Painting, and Photography Art Expo.
On January 8, 1997, the painting "The Great Wall of China" was awarded the Special Artistic Award by the China Academy of Cultural Arts Evaluation Committee and was subsequently presented as a state gift to Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
On October 12, 1997, the paintings "Nostalgia" and "Great Love" were awarded the Artistic Masterpiece Prize by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Hong Kong Academy of Fine Arts Organizing Committee.
On February 18, 1998, the painting "Northern Snow Clearing Scene" was awarded the Masterpiece Prize by the Organizing Committee of the Central Plains International Art Expo.
On June 11, 1998, the painting "Spring Sentiment in Jiangnan" was awarded the Highest Honor Prize in Art by the Organizing Committee of the Sun Bin Cup International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition.
In August 2000, he was named one of the Most Powerful State Gift Calligraphy and Painting Artists.
In 2006, he participated in the "China International Folk Cultural Exchange Tour Exhibition" organized by the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Tourism. His exhibited works received high praise from experts in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and other countries. Local media outlets including the BBC London National Television, "World News Report," and "The Sun" conducted special interviews and coverage. His works such as "Portraits of Chinese Emperors Throughout History," "Calligraphy of Mao Zedong's Poetry," and multiple portraits of world leaders have been collected by private collectors.
In October 2011, he was appointed Honorary President of the Taipei Palace Museum Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, with lifetime honorary tenure.
In October 2012, he was specially invited to inscribe a congratulatory message for the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and was honored with the title "Master Artist for the 18th CPC National Congress Inscription."
In October 2013, his calligraphy works "She De" (Let Go and Accept), "Buddha," "Zen," and "Zen and Tea Are One" won the First Prize in the National Calligraphy and Painting Competition and earned him the title "Master of Peace Art." His works and personal artistic biography were included in the anthology "Ode to Peace: Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting Collection of the Chinese Cultural Peace Prize," and these works were presented as state gifts to embassies, cultural and academic institutions, and permanently archived by global peace organizations.
In December 2016, at the Fourth Hebei Provincial Specialty Craft Art Competition, hosted by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and co-organized by the Sichuan Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Television, Hebei Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, Hebei Provincial Department of Education, Hebei Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Hebei Provincial Department of Commerce, Hebei Provincial Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television Bureau, Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau, Capital Cultural Industry Association, Tianjin Cultural Industry Association, and hosted by the Hebei Cultural Industry Association and Hebei Art Media Co., Ltd., his ink painting "Abundant Fruits" won the Gold Award.
In November 2017, he was invited to participate in the Belt and Road China-Russia Cultural Exchange Event, and his landscape painting "Spring Scenery of Mountains and Rivers" was collected by the Belt and Road Promotion Association.
On September 3, 2018, he was invited to attend the Hungary Calligraphy and Painting Invitation Exhibition of the China-Europe Cultural Exchange and presided over the opening ceremony.
In 2018, he attended the 30th International Week of Science and Peace Opening Ceremony and was awarded the titles "Chinese Cultural Peace Ambassador" and "Master of World Peace Art."
