Fang Huang (Art Name: Shi Daozi), professional painter, native of Jixi, Huizhou; elegant pseudonym: Liang'an Mountain Woodcutter, master of Huizhou's Ban Geng Cottage. National Second-Class Fine Artist. Director and Academician, Chinese (Beijing) Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting Art,Director, Jiangnan Huizhou Sketching and Creation Base Center.
Fang Huang was born at the foot of the picturesque Huangshan Mountain, in Tunxi — the ancient Huizhou commercial hub situated along the Xin’an River, and the birthplace of the Xin’an School of Painting.He was profoundly influenced by traditional Huizhou culture and the Xin’an School of Painting, as well as by the teachings and personal example of his beloved father, developing from childhood a deep passion for calligraphy, painting, and music.
As he grew older, he was fortunate to serve for over thirty years at the century-old establishment — the Hu Kaiwen Ink Shop of Huizhou, where he was steeped in literary and artistic traditions, allowing his artistic skills to mature significantly….He deeply understands that the vitality of art lies in individuality; thus, his numerous works are highly distinctive. He believes that no art form has universally fixed aesthetic theories or standards applicable everywhere; only by relying on traditional aesthetic concepts — the integration of abstraction and representation, the harmony of natural simplicity and humanistic spirit, and the unity of form, spirit, and qi — can one arrive at a truly practical criterion. Every art form possesses its own foundation and aesthetic sensibility, inseparable from each individual’s cultural depth and cultivation. For this reason, he has extensively traveled throughout the landscapes of southern and northern China, journeying through mountains, rivers, and valleys, befriending fellow artists and calligraphers with humility and openness, constantly seeking knowledge to elevate his comprehensive cultural literacy and artistic techniques. He actively seeks instruction from others to continuously improve himself in all aspects. “Those who see much become broad-minded; those who hear much become wise” — this is Fang Huang’s guiding principle, and what he diligently pursues and practices on his artistic journey.
Fang Huang frequently participates in domestic and international cultural exchanges and public welfare activities. His works have been collected by friends from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and other countries and regions. Particularly, he employs his unique brushwork language and spiritual sensitivity, integrating Western concepts of “three-dimensional awareness” and “light interaction,” skillfully blending them with traditional Chinese ink elements and “paper-ink effects,” organically combining aesthetic beauty with both meticulous and freehand styles. Through this distinctive artistic language and technique, he sincerely and wholeheartedly expresses the rich rural life and deep nostalgic sentiments of Jiangnan’s Huizhou homeland — the land that accompanied his growth and journey.This profound Huizhou sentiment and unique perception can be felt in each of his artworks. His Artistic Journey: September 1992: Ink painting "Misty Clouds of Huizhou" was selected by the Japan Pan-Asian Cultural Exchange Conference and collected by the Mudan Garden Art Museum, Japan; October 1991: Participated in Japan’s “91 ‘Four Seasons of China’” Cultural and Art Exchange Invitational Competition, winning Third Prize; January 2000: Works "Ancient Melody of Huizhou," Blue-and-White Series I and II, were selected for Canada’s “World Calligraphers and Painters Marching into the 21st Century” Art Invitational Competition, included in the exhibition catalog, and honored with commendation; February 2003: Work "Melody of My Hometown" was selected for South Korea’s “03 Chinese Culture Festival” touring exhibition and awarded Silver Medal for outstanding achievement; July 2011: Yuan Yi Group successfully hosted Fang Huang’s solo exhibition “Huizhou·Ancient Melody” — ink paintings themed on classical dwellings — at the Hilton International Hotel in Hefei, Anhui Province. 2013~2014: His works were selected by the State Post Bureau, China Philatelic Association, and China Philatelic Network to participate in the nationwide public welfare event “Scientific Development, Building a Beautiful China,” and were included in the prestigious “China Stamp Album.” 2014~2015: Published and issued miniature sheet stamps, mobile phone recharge cards, first-day cover commemorative stamps, and postcards; simultaneously produced the silver commemorative stamp album “Scientific Development, Building a Beautiful China.” July 2016: During the grand commemorative event “Ink and Brush Glorify China,” themed “Pioneers of the Era,” celebrating the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, multiple of his works were selected and included in the limited-edition collectible stamp album. May 2016: His ink painting series “Entering the Hometown of Huizhou,” themed on classical Jiangnan Huizhou landscapes, was successfully selected by the U.S. Postal Publishing Bureau Philatelic Group as part of America’s National Calling Cards and published. Simultaneously, his works were also honorably included in the limited-edition commemorative stamp album marking the 37th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations, earning him the title “Outstanding Chinese-American Artist.”
