He participated in the Anhui Fine Art Masters Charity Sale for Disaster Relief, received an honorary certificate, won the second prize in the National Dongpo Cup Painting and Calligraphy Competition, was awarded in the exhibition commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution and the 90th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China, received a silver medal in the “World Garden Cup” National Painting and Calligraphy Competition, won an award in the First National Farmers’ Painting Competition, held a three-person exhibition titled “Imprints of Huizhou Style” at the Shanghai Liu Haisu Art Museum, and was included in the Painting and Calligraphy Talent Network. My classmate Liu Qingguo, who studies calligraphy, recommended to me Wu Chuanping, a professional painter from Changfeng County, Hefei City, Anhui Province, and gave me several collections of Wu Chuanping’s works. Thus, I came to know this painter from Changfeng. Wu Chuanping is under 50 years old, dressed simply, naturally shy, honest and sincere, humble and gentle. His collections not only express his personal passion for painting but also highlight the beauty of nature. Although Wu Chuanping never received formal art education at a university, he has always kept his feet firmly on the ground, painting with passion born from his love of life, his pursuit and discovery of beauty.Since childhood, Wu Chuanping worked in the countryside. Around the age of 30, he moved to Hefei, rented a small room, and began working as a welder for others—a job he continued for nearly 20 years. Even today, he still holds a welding torch, busy working at construction sites across the provincial capital. Only after returning to his rented room at night can he set aside the welding torch and pick up his brush to paint the scenes in his heart. “When I was in school, I loved drawing. Every day, I would doodle on the ground or walls with small twigs or pencils—it was my happy childhood time.” After getting to know Wu Chuanping, he once told me that even when he was hungry as a child, he remained passionately devoted to painting. Whenever he saw patterns of people, flowers, or birds on cigarette boxes or comic books, he would find every possible way to copy them. After graduating from junior high school, driven by this persistence, he sought out teachers everywhere to learn painting. Busy making a living during the day, he immersed himself in painting at night—from dawn till the stars filled the sky, through cold winters and hot summers, never ceasing to splash ink on paper. In Wu Chuanping’s simple and tidy rented room, large and small freehand brushworks, mostly masterpieces, are visible everywhere—flowers and birds full of charm, shrimp brimming with vitality, cranes exuding tranquility, landscapes vast and misty, all vividly capturing both form and spirit. Especially his lotus leaves and blossoms, painted with bold, unrestrained ink, are lifelike and vibrant.
