Personal Profile

Wang Xiaohong, member of the World Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association, pen name Xianyi, art name Wu Shi, master of Shitou Studio, and a third-generation disciple of Qi Baishi! In her early years, she studied under Master Dong Changqing to learn Qi Baishi’s shrimp, under Master Qiu to learn Li Kuchan’s eagles, and under Master Rong Zheng from Shaolin Temple to learn Chan-inspired painting! Later, she studied under Master Shao Ping to master landscape painting techniques. She has participated in and won awards at the Global Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Competition, the Dream Building · China Virtue and Art Calligraphy and Painting Competition, the 8th China Calligraphy and Painting Competition, the Sotheby’s Art Competition China Division, and the First "Baishi Cup" China Calligraphy and Painting Competition, where she received the Third Prize! She furthered her studies at Communication University of China and is currently a painter and academician of the Zhongzhou Calligraphy and Painting Academy of China. Her ink-wash shrimp deeply capture the essence of Master Qi Baishi while innovating upon his foundation: she uses light ink to splash the body, thick ink vertical dots for the eyes, horizontal strokes for the brain, and ink that becomes golden upon landing; fine brushwork depicts the whiskers. Her brushwork is both firm and flexible, her works condensed and vividly expressive. In her shrimp depictions, the body is rendered in light ink, while a single thick ink stroke defines the center of the head. The head and whiskers, as well as the claws, are elongated; the two large claws exude strength. In composition, the shrimps gaze left and right in mutual response, creating an overall aesthetic of harmony and resonance. The two shrimps employ Tai Chi brush techniques, with power penetrating through the paper! Dynamic, powerful, and textural—all fully present, imbued with Chan spirit, lively and spirited! Lifelike and enchanting. Her works have been exhibited online at Mochi and displayed on Rongbaozhai’s online platform, receiving high praise! Her artworks are eagerly collected by enthusiasts both domestically and abroad. She practices chivalry and transmits the spirit of Qi Baishi! I will continue to strive to promote and carry forward the spirit and culture of Qi Baishi!
