Gu Shizhong

Gu Shizhong
Personal Profile

Gu Shizhong was born in 1951 in Liaoning Shenyang. Raised in a family deeply influenced by traditional education, he began studying calligraphy and painting from childhood and advocates the principle of "learning from antiquity without being bound by it." His art has lived up to his calling, absorbing diverse influences while exploring and advancing boldly—achieving a unique personal style in calligraphy, painting, poetry, and seal carving, and even capable of writing with both hands simultaneously. His calligraphic style is characterized as "steady yet liberated, thick and robust, elegant and rounded, grand and harmonious, vigorous yet grounded, powerful yet graceful and refined," earning him the title of "an artist of virtue and talent, a master craftsman."     His works have received high praise from art enthusiasts both domestically and internationally. In line with the development of the times, he has consistently taken his art abroad over many years, promoting and showcasing the beauty of Chinese linear art while enjoying the pleasures of life. His landscape paintings follow the tradition of members of the China Artists Association, and he studied under Master Xu Beiting—a direct disciple of Wu Guandai (Qing Dynasty)—at the Art Research Society of Peking University’s School of Literature, beginning in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
