Impression · Ink Diagram Painting ——— Dr. Li Xiaoyang

Contemporary landscape painting: traditionalists are too traditional, innovators neglect their foundations! The future of China’s modern and contemporary art world is “dark and gloomy”! Few realize that tradition without progress becomes conservatism, and innovation without roots is “a fleeting bloom” unable to be passed down!

Dr. Li Xiaoyang has always adhered to the principle that “ink and brush must follow the times,” striving to explore a path toward modernizing Chinese landscape painting rooted in tradition! Through years of practice and research, Dr. Li Xiaoyang pioneered the inspiring “Impression · Ink” painting system, opening up a new direction for contemporary Chinese art with epoch-making significance—recognized and endorsed by his master, the internationally renowned classical artist Fan Zeng!

The theoretical foundation of the “Impression Ink” system arises from the balanced integration of three academic elements: “Impression,” “Ink,” and “Diagram.” “Impression” borrows from French Impressionism, emphasizing the study and expression of external light; Dr. Li uses brilliant light and color to recreate a “real world under light,” leaving behind impressions of time. “Ink” continues to honor the Song and Yuan traditions of ink and brushwork, freely expressing contemporary sensibilities while remaining faithful to its ancestral methods, skillfully blending tones to evoke the poetic atmosphere of landscapes. “Diagram” is influenced by Western modern art, placing special emphasis on visual impact, texture, self-expression, and striving for a fresh aesthetic that highlights a distinctly contemporary personalized diagrammatic style.

Dr. Li Xiaoyang’s “Impression · Ink” landscape paintings synthesize these three artistic disciplines—Eastern and Western. Through objective use of light and shadow combined with ink and brush, he creates a “contemporaneous” new diagrammatic landscape form, truly the “first person” in today’s art world!
