In his early years, Wu Junbin actively sought guidance from many renowned masters, which greatly enhanced his artistic skills. He often wrote letters to them, humbly seeking advice on his doubts. Master Huang Zhou personally responded to each of his inquiries, emphasizing the importance of sketching in traditional Chinese painting—a lesson that has continually inspired Wu Junbin. From then on, Wu Junbin formally became Huang Zhou’s disciple and spent over two decades creating countless sketch studies. During his rural postings, he produced numerous sketch drafts, frequently observing and interacting with herdsmen to study the movements and habits of donkeys. Gradually, he mastered a rich variety of dynamic poses, achieving a level of mastery in depicting donkeys that is now unparalleled. His brushwork is bold and refined, rich in rhythm, with diverse ink tonal variations and powerful visual impact. He skillfully integrates sketching techniques with traditional Chinese painting, producing works that are concise yet precisely rendered, exerting considerable influence. Independent Innovation: Founding Wumen Baya Culture
In 2001, Mr. Wu Junbin founded the Baya Culture initiative, aiming to promote China’s traditional “Eight Graces”—poetry, calligraphy, painting, music (qin), chess (qi), flowers (hua), tea (cha), and wine (jiu)—by integrating poetry, calligraphy, and painting into a unified artistic expression, elevating the cultural status of painting and calligraphy. This movement has gained significant influence nationally and become a paradigm of literati art. The concept of “Eight Graces” has a long history in China. Over the past twenty years, Wu Junbin has dedicated himself to developing Baya culture, gradually forming the “Wumen Baya Painting and Calligraphy School,” whose textual and emblematic elements have been officially approved and registered by the State Trademark Office.
