Dong Chen

      Dong Chen, a renowned contemporary calligrapher, was born in 1954 in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province. He is a member of the Henan Provincial Calligraphers Association, a member of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, vice president of the Zhongyuan Traditional Calligraphy and Painting Institute, and a national gift artist.

        Since childhood, influenced by his father, he developed a deep love for calligraphy, diligently copying famous models such as the stele inscriptions of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi and Yan Zhenqing's regular script, and has persisted in his practice for decades, specializing particularly in running script. Mr. Dong Chen has won numerous major awards in national calligraphy competitions; in 2007, he received the highest honor, the "Golden Ink Award"; in 2006, he was awarded the honorary title of "China Calligraphy and Painting Gold Award Artist"; in 2011, he won the Gold Award at the National Art Grand Prize and was conferred the title of "Outstanding Chinese Ethnic Artist"; in 2014, he won the First Prize at the 5th "Xizhi Cup" National Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting Invitational Competition. His works have been repeatedly selected and published in major publications such as "Collection of Chinese Regular Script" and "Collection of Chinese Running Script."

In recent years, his reputation and influence in the field of calligraphy have steadily grown; his works frequently appear in major exhibitions, competitions, auction events, newspapers, and media outlets, earning consistent acclaim from professionals and collectors alike. His calligraphy draws inspiration from ancient traditions without being bound by them, subtle yet unostentatious. His artistry is exquisite, bold and expansive, vigorous and heroic, yet never lacking in discipline. When viewed as a whole, his brushwork is flexible and varied, yet harmoniously unified, rhythmically arranged, naturally flowing, with stillness containing movement and movement containing stillness, executed with effortless mastery.

For many years, Dong Chen has pursued the true essence of calligraphy with a sincere heart, continuously refining his art to perfection. Unmoved by fame or profit, he remains calm and composed, displaying no arrogance or showiness. In the sacred realm of calligraphy, he has never forgotten his original aspiration and steadfastly guards a pure sanctuary.
