Wang Zhanying, courtesy name Jinzhi, art name Xisheng Qingru, alternate art name Dingzheng. Master of Sanle Studio. Born on February 25, 1965, ancestral home Shandong Haiyang. Native of Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province, China; renowned Chinese calligrapher. Currently a member of the China Calligraphers Association; Vice Chairman of the Suihua City Calligraphers Association; Chairman of the Zhaodong City Calligraphers Association. Special-appointed calligrapher of the Beijing Bayi Academy of Painting and Calligraphy; part-time calligraphy professor at Beijing Second Foreign Languages University. Mr. Wang has loved calligraphy since childhood, profoundly influenced by the great ancient Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi. For decades, he has diligently copied the styles of the Two Wangs and the masters Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Liu Gongquan, rigorously training his fundamental skills. He has also deeply studied the essence of calligraphy by modern and ancient masters such as Su Shi, Mi Fu, Zhao Mengfu, and Qi Gong, integrating their strengths into his own style and ultimately developing a unique personal aesthetic. Mr. Wang Zhanying possesses profound attainments in calligraphy, with highly skilled techniques, sharp brushwork, bold and unrestrained strokes, powerful and vigorous lines. The characters flow naturally from one to another, dynamic and fluid; within every line and stroke radiates elegance and grandeur! The character forms twist and soar gracefully, beautiful and captivating—each piece is truly a masterpiece! A poem praises him: Ink flows majestically like a spring cascading down, Sparing ink as precious as gold, a wanderer afar. Brush and ink shimmer with spirit, stirring antiquity and modernity, Peak turns, path winds, talent poured freely forth. Mr. Wang Zhanying excels particularly in regular script and running-cursive script; especially renowned for his one-millimeter miniature regular script, unmatched worldwide. He is adept at writing Buddhist sutras, the Analects of Confucius, The Art of War, and other historical masterpieces. His miniature regular script long scrolls have been exhibited and awarded in numerous domestic and international exhibitions and published in many publications at home and abroad. His miniature regular script long scrolls are highly esteemed and collected by art collectors. Major representative works include: The one-millimeter micro-regular script work combining painting and calligraphy, “Portrait of Mao Zedong,” and “Portrait of Guanyin Bodhisattva,” as well as the six-millimeter regular script long scroll “Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra,” all considered classic masterpieces. His miniature cursive script long scroll of the “Analects of Confucius” was highly acclaimed by the late Mr. Zhong Ling, who gladly inscribed its opening title. Major awards received: In 2002, his work was selected for the Third Regular Script Exhibition hosted by the China Calligraphers Association; In 2004, his work won the Second Prize in the “National Large-scale Calligraphy Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Deng Xiaoping’s Birth,” hosted by the China Calligraphers Association; In August 2004, his work won the Third Prize in the “National Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Deng Xiaoping’s Birth,” jointly hosted by the People’s Daily Press and the Central Literature Research Office; In 2005, his work won the Gold Prize at the “Third (China) Tianjin Calligraphy Art Festival,” hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the China Calligraphers Association, and the Tianjin Municipal Government; In October 2005, his work won the Second Prize in the “International Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the China Painting and Calligraphy Newspaper,” hosted by the China Painting and Calligraphy Newspaper; In November 2005, his work won the Third Prize in the “‘Hanmo Chuan Xin’ Wenhui-Xuancheng Cup National Calligraphy Competition,” jointly hosted by the Shanghai Calligraphers Association, the Shanghai Wen Hui Bao, and the Xuancheng Municipal Government; In 2007, his work received an Excellent Award in the “Sixth International Cultural Exchange Sakler Cup Calligraphy Competition”; In 2009, his work won the Silver Award in the Seventh International Cultural Exchange Sakler Cup Calligraphy Competition in the Young-Middle Age Group. In 2008 and 2017, his works were successively exhibited in two Beijing exhibitions organized by the Heilongjiang Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, the Heilongjiang Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Heilongjiang Calligraphers Association, where he was received by central leaders including then-Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC Jia Qinglin. In particular, Mr. Wang Zhanying’s uniquely created one-millimeter micro-regular script received high praise from Chairman Jia Qinglin and several renowned calligraphers. Mr. Wang Zhanying’s calligraphy works are currently priced at RMB 20,000 per square foot. Their value continues to surge dramatically, offering tremendous appreciation potential—he is among today’s top hundred most investment-worthy calligraphers.
