Personal Profile
Zhai Yucheng, studio name: Tamò Shanjū; art name: Moying; male, Han ethnicity, born on March 12, 1958. Native of Hebei Province, Haixing County, currently residing in Huanghua City.
Since childhood, Zhai Yucheng has been deeply passionate about traditional Chinese cultural arts, engaging in music, chess, painting, and calligraphy, with a particular preference for calligraphy. The environment for learning calligraphy in those days was one he knew well through personal experience—whether at school, in his hometown, or in the military, he always used calligraphy to convey the culture of brush and ink. He studied under the traditions of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, later absorbing the essence of Tang dynasty regular script, meticulously studying exemplary works of Wei Bei and regular script from various dynasties, copying countless models day after day, year after year, silently devoted for decades. He excels in Wei Bei regular script, while also proficient in running script and wild cursive script with vigorous, unrestrained strokes. He is among the top hundred most influential contemporary榜书 (large-character calligraphy) masters in China. His mastery of Wei Bei regular script is profound; he loves life and never ceases to write. Rooted in tradition yet not bound by it, his deep classical foundation manifests in fluid, expressive brushwork—soft yet firm, elegant and refined, powerful and bold, rugged and unadorned, naturally spontaneous and endlessly intriguing. He is a diligent and earnest calligrapher, widely recognized by the art community as an artist with tremendous potential. His calligraphy works have won awards or been exhibited more than thirty times in prestigious national-level calligraphy competitions. Some of his works have been collected by major domestic enterprises, academic institutions, and private collectors, while others are held by foreign admirers. Do not say the mulberry and elm trees are late in the day—their evening glow still fills the sky. Fear not the floating clouds that obscure your vision; look far ahead toward the future.
