Ma Wenluan, female, styled Zhuyun, also known as the Master of Zui Mo Studio, was born in Bazhou, Hebei Province in 1940.
She is currently a member of the China Calligraphers Association, Vice Chairwoman of the Hebei Women Calligraphers Association, member of the Hebei Artists Association, Honorary Chairman of the Bazhou Artists Association, and Honorary Chairman of the Bazhou Calligraphers Association.
From an early age, she received family instruction in calligraphy, grounding her art deeply in the Liu style, with particular emphasis on and prolonged study of the "Xuanmi Pagoda Stele." She has also extensively studied the styles of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Han clerical script, Wei stele inscriptions, Tang regular script, and cursive grass script, gaining substantial benefits. Her exploration of multiple scripts has broadened her vision and thinking; her close reading and copying of ancient steles and rubbings have enriched her brushwork techniques; her study of poetry and literature has enhanced her extrinsic skills and cultural depth. Firmly committed to her pursuit, her dedication has only grown stronger with age. Her calligraphy and painting works have been exhibited numerous times at national-level exhibitions and competitions, winning first prize (painting) and special award (calligraphy) at the First Asian Women's Calligraphy and Painting Competition, a bronze award at the "China Seasons" Fine Arts Exhibition, and an outstanding work award at the "National Peony Contest for National Flower." Her works have been collected by museums or engraved on stone, including the Ye Ting Memorial Hall in Huizhou and the Genghis Khan Memorial Hall in Inner Mongolia.
Her calligraphy works are included in collections such as "Collection of Contemporary Chinese Famous Couplets," "Collection of Works by Contemporary Chinese Women Calligraphers," "Selection of Modern Chinese Calligraphy," and "Representative Works of Chinese and Japanese Women Calligraphers"; her paintings appear in "China Seasons," "Chinese Peonies," and "Masterpieces of Contemporary Artists: Freehand Peonies"; her poetry is included in "Three Hundred Contemporary Chinese Poems." Her published books include: "Ma Wenluan's Peony Painting Collection," "Learning to Paint Peonies," "Selected White-Line Drawings of Peonies," "Techniques for Painting Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum," "Selected White-Line Drawings of Various Flowers," and "Collected Illustrations of Flowers."
