Zhao Dengshan’s small regular script exhibits exceptional classical beauty, emphasizing artistry and cultural depth, inheriting the styles of masters such as Zhong Yao, the Two Wangs, Zhao Mengfu, and Wen Zhengming. Renowned calligraphers including Qi Gong, Shen Peng, and Liu Bingsen have highly praised and recognized his work. Zhao Dengshan’s “New Zhao Style” small regular script emphasizes horizontal and vertical composition, with meticulous brushwork, refined and smooth ink application, fluid and ingenious strokes, each character arranged with rhythmic harmony and unified spirit, exuding elegant charm like strings of pearls hanging delicately or fine jade scattered gracefully—possessing extremely high aesthetic value. Teacher Tie Ning commented on Zhao Dengshan: “In the past hundred years, Hebei’s painting and calligraphy world has produced two great masters: the painter Bai Shouzhang, and in contemporary calligraphy, none other than Zhao Dengshan. Since ancient times, those capable of mastering large regular script, small regular script, cursive script, and running script are rare exceptions—and Master Zhao Dengshan is one such unique case. Especially over the past twenty years, his calligraphy has matured into extraordinary mastery; his works created near the age of eighty, ‘Tao Te Ching’ and ‘Diamond Sutra,’ are of immense collection value and irreplaceable treasures. His small regular script version of ‘Tao Te Ching’ is enshrined and preserved by the Baiyun Temple, the sacred Daoist site in Beijing; his ten-meter handscroll of small regular script ‘Diamond Sutra’ is enshrined and preserved by Mount Wutai and Lingyun Chan Temple in Taiwan. He has collaborated with numerous museums across China, the National Library, Xiling Seal Society, and other institutions to create customized works. Original “New Zhao Style” calligraphy pieces have been collected by multiple institutions within the cultural relics and museum system, making significant contributions to promoting traditional calligraphy art.”
