At that time, He’s physical and mental condition were both excellent. Pan Shih described his body as “stronger than his spirit,” and his desire for invention was also very strong. “He could read, and was generous to Fei Songmei.” The main reason for his smooth physical and mental state was still meeting old friends at Xiangxuehai Caotang. As it is said, “Ten days of cold spring snow; the first name is unforgettable Deng!”

Pan Zunqi invited He to paint a scroll titled “Xiangxuehai Caotang.” The first chapter of the “Simei Pavilion” painting was executed by He, with the inscription: “Zhenyuan requested the same-year colleague to inscribe, during the Chou spring,” with a white seal. The first three characters were written in He’s own hand, followed by the signature: “Jian’ai requested the same-year colleague to inscribe, He,” with a white seal “He Yin” and a red seal “He Zizhen Yin,” with no date. The seals on both scrolls may be referenced in the Xiling scroll of Xiangxue Caotang:

Like Pan Shih’s famous “Three Pictures of Xiangxue Caotang for Xixi,” He’s “Preface to the Xiling Scroll” was likely also composed during his visit to Pan Shih in Suzhou in the Chou year of Tongzhi.

Note: According to Zhang Yu’s “Record of Yuyue Xiangxue Caotang,” the original owner of Xiangxue Caotang built the thatched pavilion on Dengweishan in the second year of Xianfeng (1854), residing there with his wife Wang. Since Song had just acquired the “Four Plum Scrolls” by Yang Bu, he preserved the “Four Plum Pavilion.” According to Cheng’s postscript, in the Xianfeng period (1856), Cheng composed the “Record” for Pan Zunqi, titled “Poems to Bai Suoshan, Resident of Xipu.” Thus, the painting center of this scroll originates from this. Between 1860 and 1864, due to the Taiping Rebellion, Pan Zunqi’s family relocated to Shanghai, and his wife Wang passed away during this period from illness. In 1865, when He arrived in Suzhou, he passed by the Pan family’s Xiangxuehai Caotang and inscribed the two characters “Xiangxuehai Caotang.” Hence, the introduction of this scroll derives from this. The first segment of Cheng’s painting is “A Good Friend of Bao Chong”; after Pan Shih turned sixty, he adopted the name “Xipu,” which He and Yu Yue called “Jianyuan.”
