Yun Shouping's reputation as a landscape painter was overshadowed by his flowers, and it was not until modern times that his landscape works were discovered and immediately recognized.
Wu Hufan once used the phrase “the Way of Heaven leads to immortality,” and at the time of Ding Ming’s death, he devoted his entire life to painting and calligraphy, with brushwork shifting with emotion, playing naturally; since the Tang Dynasty, he stood alongside Wang, Mi, and Xiangyang, leaving a clear impression on Nantian’s landscape painting. “Shigu devoted his entire life to deeply appreciating Nantian and worked hard to promote Nantian’s advancement.” (Wu Hufan’s inscription on Yun Shouping’s “Ancient Style Landscape Album,” Lot 147, Xiling Spring Auction 2008)
Works such as Huang’s “The Subtleties of Ancient Paintings,” Fu Baoshi’s “Outline of the Transformation of Yunnan Tian and the Chinese Painting World,” “Complete History of Chinese Painting,” “History of Chinese Painting,” and “Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Artists’ Surnames” all recognize Nantian’s influence on landscape painting as superior to that of the “Four Wangs” or Yun’s flower-and-bird paintings.
